Since this thread will probably get a lot of views let this be my yearly reminder that when it comes to the desktop/download version, virtually no one needs anything other than Turbotax Deluxe.

TT strongly pushes Premier and Home & Business but the fact is that TT Deluxe can handle every situation that these more expensive versions can. The only exception that I am aware of is the ability to create W2 and 1099 forms for employees in H&B.

Deluxe has everything for all investment types, everything for owners of rental properties, everything for self-employed (1099-NEC/Schedule C filers), everything for those who do itemized deductions.

The higher versions offer more guidance but Deluxe has all the forms required and will still walk you through all of it.

Note that Turbotax Online is completely different, Deluxe Online is purposely limited forcing more complex returns to use the more expenisve Online versions than Deluxe.

Friendly reminder that this now requires Windows 11 and unfortunately will not work on Windows 10.

Or just do freetaxusa and get the same experience on the web for free. I think state is like $15 if you want to do that through them too

The download Deluxe version will handle your stock sales. I've used it for several years and it handles everything including capital loss carryovers.
Thanks. Can it import 1099-Bs? I've a bunch of lots and trying to avoid to to enter them manually?

Very late for Amazon to do. They usually do this right after Christmas.
They usually DID it the day after Christmas, but not in 2024 or in 2025.

How us friendly is h&r? Does it update to any new tax laws? Ppl say, its a little buggy, can you confirm? Does it off 1 free state file?
Personally hate the H&R user experience. Takes longer. More confusing than TT. Tried them both. Go back to TT. Not worth the savings.

Absolutely! Make sure your brokerage firm is in the import list. The only issues I've experienced with TT is with municipal bonds and a K-1 partnership.

Does anyone know if there is a deal for TurboTax online version every year too?
TT online tends to be less capable, cost more, and have more opportunities to upsell you to complete your taxes after you've started compared with the desktop version. If you don't want desktop software, FreeTaxUSA, OLT.com, and Cash App Taxes are cheaper alternatives with fixed pricing and only a few optional upgrades.

I hate buying TT (which I still do every year) for this reason more than for the cost. As far as FreeTaxUSA at some point it wouldn't be surprising for them to sell it to some other company that now has a treasure trove of advertising data and some of your most personal data.
Their privacy policy says they won't sell your information to third parties. The IRS also says it's illegal to do so without express permission.

I am stuck with TurboTax year after year. I'm kinda intrigued by the idea of importing my .tax file from last year's TT into FreeTax just to see what it can do. Mine isn't overly complex but it is also not just the easy W2 income, standard deduction, wham bam thank you ma'am either. I always just figure spending the 45 bucks (plus then I buckle and spend another 25 to eFile state because I don't want to take more time to input into my state website just to save 25 bucks is worth it to get we done with least drama but I'm open to alternatives
FreeTaxUSA can handle very complex taxes. Here's a list of what is supported and not supported (the not supported list is quite short): https://www.freetaxusa.com/forms/

OLT.com, Cash App Taxes, and apparently now Chime are alternatives that are also cheap or free that are very capable without income limits.

Ai just told me that FTUsa cannot import a .tax file from TT. It said it could import a PDF of a prior year return and pull some of the info off of it. But it wouldn't have all the capital loss carryovers and other stuff that sits in the background. Is that true?
Capital loss carryover is listed on the forms in the PDF, so it should carry over. You can always start with the import and see what comes across. You can of course manually enter that item if you need it.

Can import directly from your brokerage for sure, but don't think it can use a 1099-B picture/scan. It's definitely the same as Premier though.

Do they have any help if stuck like turbo tax does
They have phone support available. The in-app guidance is not quite as good IMO.

You might want to add SamsClub to the list. Starting January 19th, Sams will also have the same promotion. You can find it on the last full page of the Jan 2nd - 25th Instant Savings flyer.

***Do I have too many memberships?
CostCo Executive - Rarely shop there. I keep it for their Visa card rewwards and Travel benefits. I get a reward check (direct deposit) of $1K every year.
SamsClub Business Plus - Love their free delivery, curbside and their Scan and Go. Their Optical department (my location) is worlds better than CostCo. The ability to add addition members more affordably. I use my CostCo Visa shopping here.
Amazon Prime - Prime Video, shopping for nearly everything.
Kroger Delivery - Best prices I can find on many products (when shopping sales and flash sales). Easy refunds on the rare occassion there is a problem with delivery. Shedding tears because it is leaving my area at the end of January.
Walmart+ - Anyone over 50, sign up for AARP to save $40 on Walmart+ annual.
Thanks @airrich
You're correct regarding Sam's Club. Their January 2026 flyer shows the upcoming sale & discount.

Not sure how much each product is being discounted though, as it says "up to $20 off". Probably more on the more expensive versions.

This requires Windows 11 right? Is there any workaround to this? I really don't want to get a new computer with Windows 11 just to use Turbotax... it's one of the factors forcing me to consider using something other than Turbotax.

If I purchased TurboTax from Costco on 12/28/25 (But I haven't broken the seal on the pamphlet they give you that has the registration # on it) can I return it and buy it again when its on sale? Alternatively, will Costco price match it when it goes on sale?

I assume once you're in FreeTax's online system then your returns can seamlessly migrate year to year yes?
