A friend tipped me off, and I just tried it myself. Having signed up with CIT bank (online only) years ago from SD, but I wanted to earn 4% APY. I just tried to transfer my whole account to another bank, and it immediately offered to upgrade from my current APY (about 3.75%) to 4%.
It may not work if you have a small balance, or if you're only transferring a small part of your total account there, but it's worth a try to see if they at least counteroffer just to get a bit more interest, should you have an account there! The offer was for a 12 month period.
