If one buys 500 worth of stuff, gets the discount, but returns something, bringing the original cost under $500, what happens?

Prorated credits/refund such as 10%. (For example: Spent $500, get $50 off is like 10% and discount for all item (let say 5), Return 1 item worth $100 (maybe cost you $90 so you get $90 credit back and not the full $100. Just a rough estimate since the discounts are not exactly and not equally divided for all items).
