apologies as I've been out of the loop. Would this CPU compete with an i5 or an i7 13th/14th gen? CPU benchmark says considerably lower than an i7 but considerably higher than an i5.

Hardware canucks has a a cpu scaling video. They show benchmarks for 9070xt and 5070 @1440p and it's more than competent in a strictly gaming scenario.14th gen i5 only 2 fps higher on either card. 9800x3d 6fps higher avg between the two. Of course that margin widens slightly at 1080 but tightens even more at 4k. I'm NOT saying you shouldnt get a9800x3d if it suits you or that you should pair this with a 5080 or 5090
