  • Author: Emily St. John Mandel
  • Page Length: 353 pages
  • Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.
  • Twenty years later, Kirsten moves between the settlements of the altered world with a small troupe of actors and musicians. They call themselves The Traveling Symphony, and they have dedicated themselves to keeping the remnants of art and humanity alive. But when they arrive in St. Deborah by the Water, they encounter a violent prophet who will threaten the tiny band's existence. And as the story takes off, moving back and forth in time, and vividly depicting life before and after the pandemic, the strange twist of fate that connects them all will be revealed.

Didn't read the book. But I watched the TV series. I got all the way to the second to last episode and afterwards said to myself: I can't take this anymore. Never watched the final episode.

Same here, really great read. The Glass Hotel was good, too.

The book and TV show are different enough that if you enjoyed one you should try the other. You'll get different experiences from both.

Absolutely fantastic book--different type of dystopian fiction.

It was definitely a slow burn with little payoff. Perhaps the book is better but I'll probably skip it.

Thanks will have to give it a read. I enjoyed the tv series. I get some people's complaints but it felt refreshing that they did not resort to violence/gore porn or other post apocalyptic tropes like TWD, and TLOU. That and the show had one of my favorite scenes in over a decade. That being the Tribe Called Quest scene.
