These use a pci express lane to transfer data instead of USB. That's how it's 8x faster than regular SD cards. Remember though to hook these up to your computer you need a special SD Express card reader. This isn't an issue to most people who're buying these for their switch 2 but if the switch 2 ever gets the ability to be modded it will be. Sabrent sells a $30 reader but that requires a special SD Express adapter, some SD Express cards come with one (same as the large SD adapters that come with lots of SD cards, but they have a different pin layout). These cards dont come with one I'm pretty sure. There's a couple other brands of SD Express readers and one of them has a Micro SD express slot in addition to an SD Express slot but it's like $100. It's hard to even find a SD Express Micro SDe to SDe adapter to buy just by itself, you'll likely have to buy a card that comes with one. I bought a reader, I don't even have a device that needs one but they are cool for retro gaming handhelds cause they work just like regular SD cards too, but when I want to transfer roms onto the card from my computer it's 8 times faster. So it has benefits for transferring files to them even if you're not using them in express devices. But ya, you need a SD Express reader.

Fwiw, I just bought one of these when they were $32.99 a couple of weeks ago and it is plug and play with the Switch 2. Nice to see some regular price drops on the Express cards. Wouldn't surprise me if the MSRPs go down in the near future, as well.

Thanks man.. this is nuts but eventually tech debt when it's sitting catching dust in a few years because of the next new thing ... lolSounds cool tho for those with newer pcs and devices that can take advantage of

i heard those are potentially failing early with no clear warranty from what ive seen on gamestop website reviews and in the comments from a deal i posted on them.

No, you don't. A regular MicroSD card reader will work fine, you just won't get the higher speeds provided by the SD Express standard.

It's a standard. MicroSD has a dizzying array of them. On fully compatible devices, they tap in with PCIe and are on par with SSDs.

If I insert this microSD card into a normal microSD card reader, will it work at slower speeds or not at all?

I have been thinking about getting a Gamestop 512 microSD express to use also (under $50 ebay), but the no warranty and lower quality changed my mind. If you were to use most SD Express in a non Express device, they will default back to UHS-1 (104MB/s) and usually A1 speeds. This Samsung is the only one among the ones available right now that will stay in A2 speed. A2 is faster random read/writes and useful for things like OS (hacked Nintendo Switch, Emulators, OS, Pi, Phone or Tablet Extended storage). Plus it runs a lot faster and cooler. Samsung really is the top of memory right now.
