The WD Black SN7100 is a fast 1TB NVMe drive at a sharp Walmart price, but the listing appears to be wrong about it being Gen 5. The drive is repeatedly described as Gen 4, and it is also called out as a DRAM less model. At $89, it is framed as a strong value versus current SSD pricing, especially for backups, laptop use, or a portable enclosure. The main caveat is that local stock and shipping availability are inconsistent, so the deal can be hard to find in practice.
buyers hunting for a strong Walmart SSD deal right now because commenters said the $89 price is reasonable versus the current market and could be among the best deals you'll see for a while if you need something like this.
people who can verify local availability in-store because multiple commenters warned that Walmart's stock listings can be inaccurate and suggested visiting local Walmarts if you need one or a few.
people who need a fast NVMe drive for quick backups because one commenter bought a couple and uses them in a portable holder specifically to make fast back ups.
laptop upgraders who are okay with using the SN7100 as a laptop option because one commenter said they plan to use the SN7100 for a laptop (citing that Tom's Hardware ranks SN7100 top for laptops).
people who rely on Walmart's "in stock" status online because commenters said it often shows out of stock for them and that local stock listings can be wrong (including due to theft).
shoppers comparing within the same brand line who want the best value at a similar price because one commenter said a WD_BLACK SN850X 2TB listing for $189 looks like a way better deal than this $89 1TB Gen5 post.
$89 is a strong price for this drive in the current market, and it is described as one of the better deals available if you need a 1TB NVMe now. The caveat is that similar or better-value options, including larger drives, may be available elsewhere.
No, it is very YMMV and often shows out of stock depending on local inventory. Walmart's stock display can be inaccurate, so checking nearby stores in person may be necessary.
Not producing them "for" Western Digital. Western Digital doesn't have any new SSDs now. They will only be selling HDDs. After they sell all of the old stock new SSDs will be under the SanDisk name.
The Western Digital website doesn't show SSDs anymore except under the support section.
Thanks for the tip on Walmart. I was looking for something a little bigger so I found a WD Black 4TB SN850x for $319 in stock (1 left) at a Walmart not too far away me. I just got back from picking it up!

I picked up one of these, and two SN850X all 1TB. I need one for a laptop, and am trying to decide which one to use. Tom's hardware has an article listing the SN850X as the top drive, but the SN7100 as top for laptops.
Just for reference, Walmart is also selling (YMMV):
1TB blue for 66
2TB blue for 124
1TB 990 pro for 120
2TB 990 pro for 189
1TB SN850X for 120
2TB SN850X for 189
4TB SN850X for 320
Highly YMMV. I found some of the above in San Antonio, Temple, and other remote Texas areas. Good luck hunting. Tyler Texas also has a bunch of stuff in stock.

Snatched one for my ROG Ally. I recently swapped 2tb from it to my desktop because of those crazy ass prices. Now I'll have 1t handheld so not bad at all.

If you can get it, then get it. You can never have too much storage.

What brand portable holder did you use?
