The WD Black SN7100 is a fast 1TB NVMe drive at a sharp Walmart price, but the listing appears to be wrong about it being Gen 5. The drive is repeatedly described as Gen 4, and it is also called out as a DRAM less model. At $89, it is framed as a strong value versus current SSD pricing, especially for backups, laptop use, or a portable enclosure. The main caveat is that local stock and shipping availability are inconsistent, so the deal can be hard to find in practice.

  • The $89 price can look strong compared with current market pricing for this class of NVMe SSD.

  • A faster WD Black alternative like the SN850X may be available for not much more money.

  • The SN7100 can work well for fast backups when used in a portable holder.

  • Walmart pricing for these components may stay steadier than other retailers during price swings.

Most of these walmart storage deals that's showing in stock for some but not others is because its showing local stock. Best to just visit your local walmarts if you need one or a few. The stock isn't even accurate. These get stolen all the time and their stock will show them having when they really don't.

SN7100 is definitely gen4. Do not buy this expecting Gen5.

Considering the supply issues in this area that are beginning to take shape, I would load up.

Reasonable price on a good drive. Seen it a bit cheaper with similar performance, though.

What brand portable holder did you use?

Thanks

This is a repost of a deal I'd put up about a week ago...

Now, at that time I clearly called out this was a Gen 4 (and not a Gen 5) so those of you that bought this thinking it was a Gen 5...well...sorry. Would recommend @SalesSizzler edit this post to reflect this is a Gen 4.

And if you still are interested but feel you missed out...well, they are still available (at least my local Walmart still has one in stock). Not sure how far Walmart will ship (I think it seems to be local shipping only? But not sure...maybe someone else can comment) but might be worth expanding your search to see if you can find one...

Buy it if you need and can.
Prices are about to be out of control. SanDisk is now producing these for WD, this is listed on their site with SanDisk branding at $212.99.
Not producing them "for" Western Digital. Western Digital doesn't have any new SSDs now. They will only be selling HDDs. After they sell all of the old stock new SSDs will be under the SanDisk name.

The Western Digital website doesn't show SSDs anymore except under the support section.
