The Steam Deck OLED stands out as a compact, premium handheld with strong game compatibility, unique trackpads, and an OLED screen that is the main visual upgrade. The open SteamOS setup makes it easy to tinker, stream, and even expand storage later, with 1TB models getting an anti glare display and the option to add a large microSD card or swap the SSD. The main knocks are its chunky size, heavier feel, and the 1280x800 resolution, which can make text look soft. Battery life also gets called out as the one area that could be better, making it a strong fit if those tradeoffs do not bother you.

  • The Steam Deck supports storage upgrades by swapping in a 2TB or 4TB SSD in the 512GB OLED model.

  • The SteamOS ecosystem can support streaming and game compatibility through ProtonDB-verified settings and community troubleshooting.

  • The Certified Refurbished unit can arrive looking brand new with no visible wear on sticks, touchpads, or buttons.

  • The 1TB OLED model can include an anti-glare screen that may suit brighter indoor or outdoor viewing.

  • The Steam Deck can feel huge and heavy for handheld use.

  • The Steam Deck cannot play Xbox Game Pass games directly without installing Windows or using streaming.

  • Some non-Steam games launched through Heroic or other launchers may require repeated tinkering and can be impossible to launch.

  • The 1280x800 resolution can be a limiting factor for streaming quality even when using Sunshine or Moonlight.

You should definitely not do that if you are sensitive to latency. The G Cloud has 12ms decode time which is a 3x increase over SteamOS or Windows handhelds. I owned one briefly and sold it because of that. The light weight is nice but it's not worth trading it for only emulation capabilities and a subpar streaming experience.

It's why I like my Legion Go S, it has the simple but tunable SteamOS and uses AMD hardware just like the Deck. Even Decky works fine so you can tune it just like with the Deck. Upgrading from my 256GB LCD Deck to the Go S was surprisingly worth it, the screen is noticeably larger, brighter, higher res (1200p) and more vibrant. It weighs a bit more but the ergos are subjectively better than the Deck so I don't notice that too much. Since you have a good PC you can also take advantage of high refresh and get an even smoother experience.

Battery life is similar at the same wattages, but it charges super-fast compared to my Deck. As for performance, I think the Z2 Go is not at the level of the Z1E, but it's still faster than the Deck. It offers a noticeable improvement and can keep up with the increase in resolution in both lighter and heavier games. I played Inside which is not graphically demanding but typical of indies one might play on Deck and it breezed through it at low power for 3-4 hours. Not going to talk about the game itself since the ending was not that great. It's the best option right now and probably the near future given how RAM pricing has likely driven up costs of the Cube and could do the same for the Deck 2...
Thanks for the heads up. Is that with moonlight/sunshine setup? Right now I stream to my google pixel tablet, or amazon firestick running moonlight and both are fine for non-competitive stuff. Why is the g-cloud so laggy?

And yea I think Lenovo's handheld is the best out there right now. Maybe Asus is close, but wouldnt buy from some a crappy company.

I don't play enough to justify buying anything new yet, but hopefully once the next BIG upgrade comes out I'll be able to get a Legion at a discount.

I understand why valve chose 1280x800, but it really is the one thing I hate about my deck.

Yo check out Apollo/Moonlight. I never have any issues with text, but maybe that's just the kinda junk I'm playing
I use Sunshine/moonlight, and the deck's 1280x800 res is the limiting factor here. If they just bumped it up to 1080p the deck would be more than fine for me.

Yes I'm using Sunshine/Moonlight. I also have a Pixel Tablet and its pretty similar in decoding time to the G Cloud, so I guess if you're fine with that then you could go for the G Cloud. The reason it's (to my perception) laggy is because they are using an old processor from early 2020.

The Pixel Tablet is a few ms faster at around 9. If you have a modern phone then it will perform much better. Anyway all of the x86 handhelds have the best decoding time so even this OLED deal would be better if you primarily plan on using the device for streaming. It's kinda disappointing since the G Cloud is super light, ergonomic, and has a big screen but WiFi 5 + SD 720G is not a good combo.

I received this today for my son. Steam seems to have an excellent refurbishing program because this thing looks brand new! Not a single scratch, scrape, smudge anywhere, not even a tiny bit of wear on the sticks, touchpads, buttons, etc. that would happen after say 10-20 hrs of play. All accessories included as if new, etc. I am not sure why Steam hasn't raised their refurb prices given the quality and how fast they sell out... you save $130 for basically the same thing!

Looks at my Switch OLED….
Yeah I'm playing both games on my 3 year old phone. But when I get my steam deck I'll play ballxpit on that.
