Note that size matters (haha). For a home with a 200A panel, a surge device of 100-120kA is recommended. The square D ones pictured seem to max out at 80kA. The 80kA ones are OK for homes with 150A panels.

These units are based on Metal Oxide Varistors. They are sacrificial and degrade as they absorb spikes.
