Edifier MR3 is a compact powered studio monitor pair that stands out for desktop listening, easy Bluetooth streaming, and strong value at this price. The speakers sound very good for the money, take up hardly any space, and can work well with a PC, DAC, or turntable preamp through their analog inputs. Bluetooth quality is described as close to wired, and the Edifier app adds a low pass filter and saved equalizer settings over Bluetooth. The main limits are modest bass and near field output, so larger rooms or phono setups may want a subwoofer or bigger speakers.
Common Questions (5)
No DAC is required because the MR3 has analog inputs including RCA, TRS, and AUX, and it is an active speaker so you cannot add an external amp. A PC can connect directly with a 3.5mm-to-RCA cable or 3.5mm-to-dual-TRS cable; a DAC is only needed if you want a cleaner USB-to-analog source.
The MR3 can sound good for desktop use, but several comments note that bass is limited by the small near-field design and 3.5-inch drivers. A subwoofer helps if you want more low end, especially for a larger room or phono listening.
Yes, if the turntable has a built-in preamp or you add a separate phono preamp, the MR3 can be used directly because it is powered. Without a preamp, the turntable signal is too weak for these speakers.
Bluetooth quality is reported to be very close to wired for casual listening, and the Edifier app can add a low-pass filter and save EQ settings to the speaker when connected over BT. For gaming, wired is still preferable when latency matters.
The MR3 is a near-field monitor meant for about 2-4 feet of listening distance, so it works best on a desk or in a small office. It can play in a larger room, but it will not fill a 350 sq ft space at party volume without help from a subwoofer or larger speakers.

Or will going unbalanced make too much hum? (I am using an interface with my monitors and never tried hooking them up direct).

Whoops, I got it switched. The TRS input is balanced but the RCA input is unbalanced.
So a cable like this?

You don't have a way to hook up an amp as this is an active speaker
