you buy it at this price you are abusing your credit card and encouraging them to keep raising prices...

It's not getting any cheaper; it's probably your last chance. This shids like Bitcoin now. AI data centers are going to take over all of the production.

damn, 2x8gb. I bought 2 x 32gb top class ram about 6 months ago for $200 and I could resell it now for like 2 or 3 times that amount. Wild times.

Keke 16gb only for $230. Hopefully no one is downgrading to 16gb for a desktop.

When the AI money runs out, there will be a shit load of inventory, albiet server grade.

Why is anyone buying 2x8GB sets in 2026? At least this is a 4 slot mobo so you could upgrade to 32GB down the road, but given current memory pricing kind of ridiculous to engage them. Reduce consumer demand for these low capacity sticks and we could at least benefit from production shifting solely to higher capacity (16GB+) sticks.

I want to upgrade my plex server. Was going to go ddr4 since I have spare ram. 16 isnt great but not terrible for plex. Anyone seen any better intel bundles?

And when do you think that'll happen? Will AI make money in the future?

Seeing how the market keeps valuing Elon even for the kind of person he is, I feel like the market will also keep feeding AI.

There was a similar Intel deal posted on here. I was considering doing some upgrades myself but I've been out of the tech loop. My quick research shows that the AMD processors mid-high range perform better than the intel counterparts. It's pretty much a wash when I was putting together my builds.

However, on another thread, someone claimed that AMD is having memory controller problems so having 4 DDR5 memory sticks may be an issue; not ideal if you're wanting to use all memory slots.

For what it's worth, my unRAID server, which hosts PLEX, is on a 6th gen i7 with 16GB of RAM still. Since I don't have any dockers except for PLEX and some utilities, I technically have no reason to upgrade.

So take this with a grain of salt. I'm not an expert and know nothing about this section of tech only what I read. Technically intel is better than amd for plex since it supports quick sync transcoding. Ideally you'd want 12gen or newer i hear. But, I'm no expert. Like you I'm running an older gen intel cpu. I did toss a intel arc b580 i got for cheap into my rig to help with the transcoding. It's a bit overkill but it was cheap so whatever. Technically everything runs. But, if I find the right deal similar to this. I see no reason not to upgrade I can repurpose my power supply, hard drives, and similar stuff to keep price down. So just really need a good mobo/cpu combo and maybe memory depending on whats supported.
Right now I'm running an i7-6700k which like yours is a 6th gen. I'd have to go look but I think its using 32gigs of ddr4. I might have harvested 16 to throw into a work computer for my wife I can't recall. Either way though it runs mostly fine. I only have 5-6 users so transcoding isnt a huge issue and most of the stuff plays natively. But, what happens in 2-3 years? I'd rather upgrade now than in the middle of the crisis. I firmly believe it wont be solved that quickly. I think were looking at the very least 5 years. I mean I guess really a plex server runs on such minimal hardware it really isn't an huge issue even with price increases. I just want to upgrade. Set it up one last time and forget about it in the closet except when I need to upload new media.

Forecasts say we will have global ram shortages for at least 3 years.
The market values Elon because of what he can get done.

We can't do shit with server RAM.

Consumer demand is a very small part of the equation

It's not gonna work that way unfortunately... These companies are making way more money by shifting all of their production to the AI data centers, and they actually lose money catering to the Consumer PC market, which is why Crucial just left the consumer market altogether to focus on data centers. The problem is only gonna get worse unless the AI bubble randomly pops, which it obviously won't for a VERY long time. Not only that, but we also have so many companies moving towards cloud everything, including home PCs.

AI companies have bought all ram production (yes even ram not made yet) through the end of 2027. So best case scenario is beginning of 2028 before we see any chance of prices coming down
