Most drill sets and drill chucks only go up to 1/2", so this gets you one 16th larger than you have now and fits in any drill. That's handy if you need to make holes for 9/16" bolts.

If you're not a fabricator you're probably not going to run into that scenario. No assembly instructions will expect you to have this. For thin stuff like sheet metal you should use a step drill instead.
