I think I'll bite on this, thanks. I've been on the lookout for a new ~16oz claw hammer for a while, and it seems like the only ones that ever go on sale are the milled face ones.

It looks like the 17 oz non sale price is the most expensive out of all the weights, is that due to it being flat faced? Or is the 17 oz the most desirable weight?

Honestly, no clue. I was wondering about that myself. There's a 22oz smooth face one @ $28 with a 'MSRP' of $35, and they seem very similar without anything apparent to justify the higher MSRP.

It's not just Home Depot, either. Similar pricing @ ACME tools as well.

What's the point of smooth faced framing hammers? Serious question.

Uh, not destroying the surface of whatever you're working on when you get the inevitable overstrike?
People don't use these exclusively for framing just because they're called framing hammers.

Edit: Just got mine... I should've paid more attention to the length because it's super long compared to the other claw hammer I've had for years. Will be returning it.

As someone who bought this mainly for 'finish work' type stuff (and returned it)... the handle is too long for it, IMO.
You're better off with the 16oz Estwing (which is what I ended up getting instead), or another 16oz with 12-13" overall length. There was a Dewalt @ Home Depot that felt pretty nice too but I figured I'd go for the made-in-USA Estwing instead.
