This is made for devices that have a single USB-C port. You can use it if you want to power the device while simultaneously outputting video. I have a USB-C power supply that kind of does the same thing, ASUS - ROG 65W Charger Dock. It has a USB-C port to go to a device, then breaks out HDMI from the power supply. I only got it because there was a good deal. It works, but it's not worth the price. Typically people just use a cheaper USB hub or dock, they usually have USB Power Delivery input ports and HDMI output ports as well as a plethora of other ports.

Anyone know when you'll need a powered HDMI cable? Trying to see if I should just buy this to have around.

Thanks so much, Perfect explanation. Guess its good to have around!
This physically looks very similar to a Hagibis Switch 2 compatible adapter. Currently showing $24 but I got it a bit cheaper on AliE. I can confirm that this Hagibis adapter works with the Switch 2 (and Switch 1) after updating the adapter's firmware to work with Switch 2's notorious update 21.0.0 that broke all 3rd party docks. https://www.amazon.com/Hagibis-Sw...PPRV4?th=1
Heads up. Noticed the item has a notice of frequently returned item on the Amazon page.
This does not support HDMI ARC, which means if you have a surround system plugged into your TV, you will not get sound out of it - which is why there is a frequently returned notice on it.

Im guessing here. the reason for the frequent returns is
you need to have a USB-C port that supports video out, not all USB-c ports support video out so people are probably buying it and finding out the hard way that they don't have video out on their USB-C ports.
USB-C ports that support HDMI out do so via DisplayPort Alt Mode (DP Alt Mode), allowing them to send video signals like HDMI or DisplayPort directly; check your device's specs for "DP Alt Mode," a lightning bolt symbol (Thunderbolt), or look for a small "D" next to the port, as not all USB-C ports have this video capability, requiring a USB-C to HDMI adapter to convert the signal for a monitor or TV

Could be. I ended up ordering as this looks like something that would come in really handy when traveling... pairing with laptop and hotel TV.
