Hogwarts Legacy on Switch 2 is mainly notable for its upgrade path, since the game can be moved from a Switch 1 copy to the Switch 2 version for $10 and then played without keeping the original cartridge in place. That makes borrowing a Switch 1 cart from a library or friend a workable route, and the original can even be deleted after upgrading. The main drawback is pricing, since $29.99 for this card is seen as poor value next to cheaper Switch 1 digital sales and the upgrade fee. A useful option if you are focused on the Switch 2 version.
people who already own a Switch 1 version digitally and want to upgrade to Switch 2 for the cheaper path because commenters say Hogwarts works on Switch 2 without the Switch 1 cartridge being present after upgrading (they played the Switch 2 version with only the digital Switch 1 game).
players who are okay using the library/borrowed copy just to qualify for the $10 upgrade because multiple commenters report borrowing a Switch 1 cartridge, paying the upgrade, returning the Switch 1 copy, and continuing to play on Switch 2.
renters or movers who no longer have access to a big game library and want to grab a Switch 2 copy while it's cheap because one commenter said they enjoyed the deal after moving to a smaller city with none.
people who bought the original version and plan to upgrade to Switch 2 because one commenter said they deleted the original version after upgrading and the Switch 2 game still played fine.
buyers who don't want to rely on any "loophole" or cartridge-compatibility uncertainty because some commenters question whether Switch 2 upgrades require the Switch 1 cartridge to be present and doubt borrowing is viable (except if starting from Switch 1 digital).
people expecting this $29.99 price to be a standout deal because commenters say it's been sitting at that price at Target for about a month and recommend buying the Switch 1 digital version on sale for $10 and upgrading for $10 instead.
The cartridge-free upgrade behavior for Hogwarts can be unclear because it is described as a special-case loophole rather than a standard Switch 2 upgrade rule.
No. The Switch 2 version can keep working after the Switch 1 copy is returned or deleted, and the upgrade has been reported to work with both digital and physical Switch 1 ownership. One caveat is that it may require progressing in the game before the upgrade becomes available.
Not really if you can find the Switch 1 digital version on sale, because that route has been available for $10 plus a $10 Switch 2 upgrade. The same total can also be reached by borrowing a Switch 1 copy and paying for the upgrade, which makes the $29.99 card less compelling.
Yes. A Switch 1 cartridge can be borrowed from a library or friend, the $10 Switch 2 upgrade can be purchased, and the Switch 2 version can still be played after the Switch 1 copy is returned. This has also been reported to work after deleting the original Switch 1 install.

This has been that price at my Target for the last month. It's not a deal.
Just buy the digital S1 version that's been on sale for $10 and upgrade for $10. Or even better, borrow a S1 cart from a friend or the library and upgrade for $10.

Good point on the pricing.
Doesn't the SW2 upgrade require the SW1 cartridge to be in place to play? I don't think "borrowing" is viable. Only exception would be if you started w/the SW1 digital edition.

For every single other S2 upgrade yes. But for some reason not for Hogwarts. It's been confirmed multiple times and has been working for months now. So either they don't know or don't care about the loophole. From my understanding it works a little differently as you have to play the game to a certain point before you can upgrade.

It doesn't for this game. I just did it myself with an digital switch 1 version. It's the full digital game. I've returned the borrowed game and been playing the switch 2 version with no switch 1 version for the last week. I from my experience can only confirm it works with the digital switch 1 game, but there have been many threads on here and reddit that confirm it works with the physical switch 1 game as well.

Good to know! I'll have to hit up my local library now. Thanks!
This comment is objectively wrong and has nothing to do w/ the deal. Stop it.
These people amuse me because they really hoped this game would be unsuccessful thinking that everyone stands with them and when this game sold VERY well they got all worked up... and I enjoyed every minute of it.

Nope. I originally bought the original version for $10 and then upgraded to the Switch 2 version for $10. Then I deleted the original version. Played just fine.
