I have something similar to this and it works. yes, the big dog drinks and no splash or mess.

be aware that some pets don't like these -- my cat stopped drinking water and became constipated.

No Splash, no mess, yes. But observed my dogs were drinking a lot less water than before. Because of that I returned it. I don't mind the mess now, my pets drinking water satisfactorily is more important to me. So very ymmv.
