This folding magnetic rower is an inexpensive way to try indoor rowing, with a compact footprint and a price that feels low for a new machine. It is described as doing the job and assembling in under 45 minutes, but it also sits low, can be noisy, and is not easy to move around. The rope drive is called out as a likely failure point, and the monitor and footrest design may be basic compared with higher end rowers. A practical budget pick if the tradeoffs fit your space and expectations.

  • The monitor on the unit appears to offer Concept 2-style features, which can help match familiar workout tracking.

  • The $200 asking price is described as unusually good for a Concept 2-style magnetic+air design with a similar performance monitor.

  • The rower can be assembled in under 45 minutes, which makes setup relatively quick for a folding rower.

  • The deal price is framed as workable if the rower is used enough to reveal whether a higher-end Concept 2 is needed.

  • The string or rope is described as a point of failure that broke after about a year of regular use on this model line.

  • The magnetic resistance design is warned to have a resistance ceiling that may feel too low for serious power workouts.

  • The monitor and hardware may differ from product pictures, including a monitor revision that changes what is shown online.

  • Walmart shipping for a similar clone is reported to arrive in a heavily beat-up container, which can make returns difficult if damage occurs.

Hey folks. Just a heads up. This magnetic rowing machine (like MANY others) has 3 bad things that indoor rowing machine reviews tell you to watch out for:

#1 - Pivoting foot rests
#2 - Is the machine designed for a "full stroke"
#3 - Does the rowing monitor have 500m split and/or watts output.

Here's a video explaining what I just mentioned:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmD8voZez6M

Almost every sub $500 magnetic rowing machines have problems with #1 and #2. Some of the really cheap ones also have problem with #3. From looking at the pics at Walmart, I think this rower has issues with all 3.

I recently did some searching on getting a budget rower and ended up finding all these problems to look out for. I've always been a casual rower, so I had no idea. I tried buying a used Concept 2, but couldn't find one at the unicorn sub $500 price (locally).
Ended up buying a Concept 2 clone for $190 from Walmart. Working well so far.

I found a used Lifecore r100 for $200. Should I jump on that and cancel this? The r100 person hasn't replied so maybe its not available tho.

This vs. a Concept 2?
I don't have this one, but I have a Concept 2 dup(Merach R50)
this looks like cheap magnetic resistance, which all have the same issue that there is a resistant threshold limit.
On magnetic resistance rowing machines, the main issue, especially with cheaper models, is the resistance ceiling, even at the highest setting, the resistance isn't enough for serious power workouts. Unlike air rowers(Concept 2), where resistance increases dynamically with effort, magnetic resistance is fixed, and the maximum level often ends up feeling too low.

Specs wise, that unit looks pretty good. Has a design similar to a Concept C2, but does magnetic+air. That seems pretty slick. I've only used straight air or magnetic units, so I have no idea how well a combo unit works. Looks like the performance monitor has similar features to the one on the Concept 2, so that's good.

Looks like the original cost $1000+(?). $200 asking price seems almost too good to be true.

I've bought several at $500 or less locally and recently sold one for under $500. But your "if I can't find one, no once can" mentality is amusing.

Edit: I'll wear your downvotes for my calling out this blowhard as a badge of honor.
Edit 2: What a buncha losers. Please, sir, may I have another?
Must be location dependent. In the NE, a Concept 2 in decent shape will run about $700, unless it's a really old B model or something, or a heavily used gym one. Ended up buying a new one with discounts for $800 when my son joined crew in HS.

You cannot get a concept 2 for less than $800 and a 4 hour drive. I've been chasing this mythic $500 BS price for over a decade. Everyone wants a concept 2 of they want a rower.
One up on Craigslist Long Island and Philly both for under $500. 4-5 more up on craigslist for $700ish. Not saying they are legit or common, but they exist.

I've found good Model Ds for $500 or less in both CA and TX. I sold one on eBay for $450 last summer after no one bit at $500 and I saw a number there currently FS or sold for that or less. There's one FS for $400 OBO in Amherst, MA now, and 8 recently sold for $500 or less. Anyone can easily verify that rather than be a putz and essentially call someone a liar bc they couldn't find one (looking at you, Holmes1997).

The rowing monitor on my rower is different from the one in the product pictures. Not sure if I have an older one or newer one.

Just another FYI. The shipping container my Walmart clone came in was pretty beat up. I mean REALLY beat up. Almost looked like someone got pissed off hauling this heavy box, so they relieved some stress on the box. LOL.

The package is relatively heavy (~70 ish lbs). So, if there's any damage in shipping, it might be a PIA to take it back to Walmart. Just want to give you a heads up.
