At this point, you are better off optimizing an older desktop pc from Craigslist

For gaming, anything used Intel 11th gen-up and AMD 3000-up would probably be a better starting point, yes.
Notably, MSI pre-built PCs have only lightly 'nerf'd' boards, and often can be cross-flashed into their Enthusiast counterpart.

Or, building an 'import' X99 build. PC4 RDIMMs aren't quite as bad as UDIMMs on the secondary market. The extremely adventurous can try to scrape together a DDR3 X99 build, too; but, one must be pedantic w/ CPU choice.

Broadwell-E (Xeon E5 v4) beats 3000series Ryzens clock:clock core:core.
Sadly, the Haswell-E (Xeon E5 v3) are more OCable but, closer to meeting Ryzen3000, not beating it so-handedly.

DDR4 RDIMMs went up in price by the same factor as DDR5.

DDR5 RDIMMS used to be ~$150 per 32GB
DDR4 3200 used to be ~$70, or even cheaper.

Now ddr5 is ~$500-600
and ddr4 is ~$300

So, factor of 4x for both, roughly.

Back in Aug. '25 I paid roughly this for used 4x32GB DDR5-4800 (SKHynix chips, Dell pulls), and thought I overpaid.

One cannot practically stand opposed to the unstoppable force of "The Market".
$239 for 2x16GB is a very good deal, right now.

It is bad times to build/upgrade a PC with the RAM and storage prices so high. I paid $90 for 32GB (2 x 16GB) DDR5-6400 CL32 and $220 for 4TB WD SN850X on Black Friday in 2024 - just over a year ago.

I have a Haswell PC that is still cooking on DDR3. I have more games than time to play. That PC can play anything from 2019 and older with absolute ease at 1080p. The RX6600 and the i7 4790 still works great for my needs along with the SSD that I bought in 2023 for $30.

With the current state of RAM prices, this is not too bad.
