The Kasa ES20M motion sensor switch is best for hands free lighting and automation, especially in bathrooms, closets, hallways, laundry rooms, garages, and kitchens. It can trigger lights or fans on motion, then dim or shut them off on a timer, with useful schedules like lower brightness at night and full brightness in the morning. The convenience angle comes through clearly, and the price is often compared favorably with other motion or dimmer switches. The main concern is reliability, with repeated reports of lockups, fail closed behavior, and firmware problems that sometimes require a breaker reset or replacement.

  • Firmware can cause lockups and non-responsive behavior that may require manual restart or breaker resets.

  • Some failures can leave the switch stuck in a closed state, preventing manual power-off when lights remain on.

  • Reliability issues can be worse for early batches and some 3-way setups, with ES20M singled out for problems.

  • Connectivity and network compatibility can be fragile, including guidance to use 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi and VLAN isolation.

  • Firmware update behavior can be confusing because the app may not show build numbers clearly, making it hard to verify patches.

75 switches? His mansion is pretty large my guy
I roughly counted how many items were on my Tapo app and saw 75. I have maybe 25-30 other sensors (door, temperature, etc.) and stuff and miscounted them as switches.

So more like 45.

Note Kasa switches generally require a (third) neutral wire

I have this and my biggest complaint is that it cannot be kept on if you want to use the motion sensor.

So if you want to keep the light on you have to turn off the motion sensor setting in the app. There is not even a way to use the app or any of the smart integrations to make it stay on.
I don't have this switch, but the issue you've just mentioned is exactly one of the scenarios I have in mind. I did some googling last night and, according to Reddit, you can double-tap to override the motion-off aspect: https://www.reddit.com/r/TPLinkKa...gger_time/

I have a similar Unifi setup. I have an SSID and vLan just for Kasa and a second just for ES20M. They have the IoT check box config. Worked better but the firmware update made it more stable. The firmware issue is they do not like busy networks and the RAM storage fills up and locks up the OS. It is a memory leak and they know how to fix it. This is also common with IoT devices that have a really cheap board. I wonder if the first couple of batches of this switch were too cheap to manufacturer. Either way it was a business decision that negatively impacted their customers without QA.

How are you liking Unifi? I am liking it but spend days doing firewall rules with Adguard, HA, and things...

No issues or less issues with the other models. The real pain was this model.
I am a networking geek, so I enjoy it, its pretty easy setup on the VLANs and stuff. I got all my managed switches working with it, so was good I didn't have to replace them for ubiquiti switches, so that saved a bunch. There is always stuff you can configure, seems like I spend a while setting up actions in my smartthings hub or HA to make my life easier (or when my wife leaves the lights on laugh out loud) I do like how well the unifi os shows data passing thru on the dashboard, much easier laid out than pfsense was. I still need to redirect the DNS to my adguard as I am just using ubiquiti's built in firewall.

Ding it. The price went up! Before buying, I was waiting for that guy who keeps reminding us that China will watch us using this tp-link device. Now I missed the deal. Shouldn't have waited.

Really think about your application and if it will ever pay back. Let's call this $20 for the sake of easy numbers. For me, and I pay $0.28/kwh which is very high, that's 71kwh payback. If this controls a 10watt LED then the switch, assuming it lasts that long, needs to save 7142 hours of runtime to pay for itself which is about 300 days.

So yeah don't approach this as if it's going to save money.
Is your rant against smart switches or dimmer/motion switches? I can't tell but I can only assume you've never purchased switches before. These Kasa switches are 'smart' and somehow cheaper than their 'dumb' counterparts. Dimmer switches from name brands are $20-35 each. Motion switches are a similar cost. I'm not sure what you could even be ranting about here.

Rant?

Just advice. People might be using these for convenience but others for saving money by automatically turning lights off (e.g. kid proofing). I'm just pointing out that using a motion switch to save money is unlikely to actually pay for itself because of LED.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Then I saw the reply to you about using it for a bathroom fan, and I still don't get it.
house with kids that forget to turn on fan when in the bathroom or taking a shower - the motion sensor can turn on the fan automatically and the switch can turn it off if not needed.

would not use the dimmer on ceiling fans tho - will probably get very hot at low dim settings.

have one of these for stair lights with bright bulbs that are dimmable for evening/might time.
honestly tho, I prefer the Lutron switches w/ motion sensors for closets, pantry, mudroom, entry ways - they are not smart and don't need to be, but what they are is bulletproof reliable with MUCH better motion sensors (wider angle, more sensitive, resistant to humidity) that work 100% of the time.

I had to submit a ticket. They were surprisingly fast. I read this from a Reddit post. This is a very common problem.

They had a replacement firmware right away, which shows they knew it is an issue. I have no clue why they don't push this firmware to everyone. They remotely updated my switches based on MAC. Another thing that bothers me is the firmware version. They are so lazy the reused the same minor number and the app does not tell you the build number. So in the app you do not know the real build. I thankful took a screenshot to know what build improved my switches.
v1.1.6 (Build 251212, Rel.094746).

I will not buy this brand of switches for my next house. Too many issues, they keep removing features, and staff.
What is the firmware version number they gave you, is it the same as updating from its app?
the ES20M I have Hardware version 1.0 and still on the old Firmware 1.0.9
Not going to upgrade because it did not help last time, unless the latest one really fixed the freeze up issue!

I would replace it with another big brand but there isnt out there (Motion + Dimmable + Smart all in one) for now.

I purchased 8 of these switches 2 years ago. I thought they would work great and all-in-one, I was wrong.

They have huge FW problems and they know it. For some reason they don't want to fix it unless you create a ticket. Even than it has problems. The stock FW has a memory leak and it locks up. The switch will fail in either positions and the manual switch will stop working. This is a huge fire hazard and breaks local code.

Do not buy their switches. Their switches has several issues and not worth any price. So sad, since it started so strong 6 years ago.
issues could be specific to the motion sensor switches as I have a dozen or more of their basic (wifi connected) switches and a few dimmers. Started with their basic switches over a decade ago in my previous house and they worked well enough that I took them with me when I moved. The dimmers are ok ( in that they need some time to set the dimming settings to get the wanted result with a specific light fixture ) - I've had a few of them now for many years and have only had one that locked up one time. When it did, I had to flip the breaker to reset it.
