The Kasa ES20M motion sensor switch is best for hands free lighting and automation, especially in bathrooms, closets, hallways, laundry rooms, garages, and kitchens. It can trigger lights or fans on motion, then dim or shut them off on a timer, with useful schedules like lower brightness at night and full brightness in the morning. The convenience angle comes through clearly, and the price is often compared favorably with other motion or dimmer switches. The main concern is reliability, with repeated reports of lockups, fail closed behavior, and firmware problems that sometimes require a breaker reset or replacement.

I purchased 8 of these switches 2 years ago. I thought they would work great and all-in-one, I was wrong.

They have huge FW problems and they know it. For some reason they don't want to fix it unless you create a ticket. Even than it has problems. The stock FW has a memory leak and it locks up. The switch will fail in either positions and the manual switch will stop working. This is a huge fire hazard and breaks local code.

Do not buy their switches. Their switches has several issues and not worth any price. So sad, since it started so strong 6 years ago.
Same issue. Looking to replace mine ASAP

Firmware and not responding is one thing but how does that bridge over to a fire hazard? Is is an actual bad connection with arcing or something? That would a problem separate from firmware.

I had the same issue which never got fixed. It always ended up having to manually hit the restart button! Tried updated to their latest firmware, did not fix anything. Reset the switch, nothing.

I find it using the old firmware is more stable! Dont update the firmware

I was thinking the exact same thing. Then I saw the reply to you about using it for a bathroom fan, and I still don't get it.
I have been using these for years in our kids' bathroom. Combination of motion and smart allows you, for example, to have motion trigger it turn on and timer via smart to turn it off and set schedules for that type of behavior. Just snagged more of these for basement hangout where lights keep getting left on Smilie

I got 75 of them installed in my house. All the hallways and closets and kitchen under cabinet lights are motion activated.

The dimmer are great for changing brightness depending on time of time. You don't want the rooms too bright at night so i set them for 50% at 8pm every night and go back to 100% in the morning.

For the bathrooms, the motion sensor turns on the fan also as the kids would always forget to turn on the fan during bath. I actually set it to turn on everyday during their bath time.

There are so many uses for this stuff. The one bad thing about this is Kasa switches are not that reliable. I have swapped out 5 in 3 years. I was looking into swapping them all out for Leviton but they are 2.5x the price of Kasas.

I have tons of their regular, 3 way and dimmer switches, plus the plugs, never once have they locked up
I have had issues with one dimmer switch out maybe 5 kasa light switches installed in my house. It will randomly say it has turned off and it won't actually turn off the lights. If I cycle it back on to off usually it'll turn off. The issue is this switch is in my basement and if it's late an night and I turn off all the lights I won't know if it's actually off or on. Other than that I've had no issues.

I have this and my biggest complaint is that it cannot be kept on if you want to use the motion sensor.

So if you want to keep the light on you have to turn off the motion sensor setting in the app. There is not even a way to use the app or any of the smart integrations to make it stay on.

U can set it for 30 minutes. I guess if there is no motion within 30 minutes, then maybe their logic is this should be turned off.

You might be able to program it to reset the motion sensor after 30 minutes of no activity and leave it at previous light setting. You can do alot more in TAPO app (you can use the Tapo app for Kasa switches also).

I think of it as being programmable than smart/Internet controlled. I use it for bathroom lights. Dimmed to 30% brightness in the night when triggered.

damn. its overkill for all lights. how big is your house? my house is big but i just counted all of them. total is under 30 switches. including multiple "gang up" and 3-4 way switches that these will not fit. i wonder how you use so many of these assuming all of them are single pole. 1-gang switch. my bathrooms only have 1 switch for each section. cant turn on off the fan indi

I bought 2 of their motion switches to try out and both lock up after a day or so. I have to flip the breaker to bring them back online bc they become unresponsive. Both are on the latest firmware. I'm not sure why it happens but it happens. I think it has something to do with Home Assistant but I have about 30 other non-Kasa/TPLink light switches around the house and these are the only ones that give me problems.

My house is standard size in Texas. I bet if you count all the switches in your house, you might have this same number. I literally have smart switches for every one of my switches.

I actually got rid of all my multi-pole and only have 1 left. I found after putting in all the motion switches, there is no need for multi-pole.

For bathroom, i have the regular recess light and the mirror light. I also have the fan control. I use the motion sensor and dim for the lights so they come on whe you go in to the bathroom. The fan acts the same way as the light and also motion activated but is probably overkill as you can just program it to follow the light.
