Sadly just yesterday it was announced that the FCC has granted Verizon waiver so as of today any purchases moving forward they will no longer have to adhere to the 60-day policy. And there was no restrictions at all as far as I could see I don't know if it's going to be 12 months concurrent or what.

But unless you plan on using visible or straight talk or whatever for 12 months these deals are basically dead in the water now. Or unless you plan on using them as a Wi-Fi only device which I suppose could be practical for these Motorola phones since they have headphone jacks and SD cards.

So I mean you could do worse than a Moto G stylus 2025 as a music player but. ... Just terrible he depressing anti-consumer news again from the current FCC

It's too late as of today Verizon no longer has to do the 60 day unlocking because they were giving away her from the current FCC. I mean I'm sure word will get around on these comments sections but I do wonder what's going to happen to edge cases people that bought a phone a week ago or two weeks ago or whatever. Anecdotally I can say my Moto G Stylus 2025 that I bought in November seems to have been automatically unlocked in the sense that when I switched my infamobile SIM card over it still works. So far anyway.

But boy I mean I bought that maybe 80 days ago. I don't know what happens to people that bought a phone a week ago or yesterday. I don't know if the grandfathering in of the 60 day is the date of purchase or the date of activation or the date of delivery.

The worst part is the FCC didn't give them any restrictions at all so far as I could tell in the judgment. It wasn't like 60 days isn't going to work but no more than 180 days or no more than 120 days. Just a complete placating to the telecom industry.

So it has to just stay powered on? Got it.
But the model- I don't see what else it could be. According to the spec sheet (BOM), XT-2517-1 seems to be the main 8/128 or 8/256 variant. -2 is AT&T, and -3 is Cricket.
Edit: ohhhhh, wait. Straight Talk is Tracfone, right? So it's the XT2517V... I see.

You just need to power it on and connect to the internet when you want the phone to ping Motorola to check for lock status . Other than that, it can be off and stored away. Straight Talk aka Tracfone doesn't care if you don't use their service as long as you pay.

Straight Talk is a brand of Tracfone which is a brand of Verizon, so it's the Verizon model. No ROMs.

This phone seems insane for the money:
OLED Screen
68W Charging
15W Wireless Charging
Micro SD Slot
Dual Sim Support (Physical + eSIM)
120Hz Refresh
Headphone Jack
Gemini is default assistant (things like circle to search works)
In screen finger print reader
Yes, this phone is the real deal. Day to day use is straight up flagship tier. They save money by basically non-existent software support and terrible cameras, which are software labor intensive tasks outside of parts/assembly.

It's a unique combination of straight talk subsidizing phones to inflate subscriber numbers and moto/Lenovo not caring about their brand image and profits as long as somebody is buying their hardware in the US. Basically, the "bill of materials" for these flagship parts + assembly is actually only worth this much. However paying salaries for teams of software engineers is a lot more expensive in the long run. Because security updates stop in 2028 and a locked bootloader, the phone will basically be a paperweight in 3 years.

The cameras are not terrible; they feature the Sony LYTIA 700C, a high-performance image sensor. I believe they are quite suitable for the phone's class and price point. You can see it for yourself here [gsmarena.com]. Regarding it becoming a "paperweight", I am certain that my parents still use old crappy Motorola phones from the early 2020's.

Are there usually discount deals on Straight Talk plans? Can you buy these phones, activate them, use off the one month while waiting for deals to get the second month cheaper? I don't think it needs to be 60 continuous days of service is it?

You can buy the Bronze plan. Also, ST offers $5/$10 discount pretty often towards the end of the first month, ymmv.
* Doesn't need to be continuous.

You could potentially get it for much less than $150 if you could find a cheaper qualifying plan for the second month. Someone in another thread mentioned picking up a cheaper top up prepaid plan ($25) from Walmart [walmart.com].

Sure, go to your Straight Talk account -> Manage Lines & Devices -> Add a Line
The Walmart $25 plan is for StraightSAVINGS, their BYOD plan. You have to be on StraightSAVINGS to use it.

Might sound like a dumb question but does it need to be turned on at least once inside USA territory in order to be activated, or do they literally only care about you paying for the 60 days of service? I plan to have this phone shipped to my country, and the first boot would literally be outside the USA.

Backup/give away/paperweight sounds about right.
I got a Moto edge+2022 on a deal here and the battery is starting to not last longer than a day with low use. The front camera won't work anymore. Im very tech savvy and still the same issues despite multiple tries at fixing them.

It's still snappy and works perfectly other than that. And this seems like a great replacement phone for it.

Yeah, you're right. It seems to be for BYOD/BYOP only.

so it sounds like I can use rewards to get the extra service for unlock - that's good
You can, but both the referring party and the party referred need to remain active for 60 days for the points to become available. You will only have a little over 1000 points without getting referrals, which isn't enough for a service plan.

If you have an existing account with enough rewards points for a service plan, then yes...plans purchased using rewards points count as "paid service".

Yes, my previous unlock after the 60 days were in place was after I switched to a cheaper plan ($35/mo).

There are even talks about getting a even cheaper plan from a different carrier but I don't want to do it.

February '26 has 28 days. For someone who sign up now and renew the next month, they will be 1 day short for unlocking?

(NM: saw that their monthly plan is good for 30 days regardless of month)
