Sadly just yesterday it was announced that the FCC has granted Verizon waiver so as of today any purchases moving forward they will no longer have to adhere to the 60-day policy. And there was no restrictions at all as far as I could see I don't know if it's going to be 12 months concurrent or what.

But unless you plan on using visible or straight talk or whatever for 12 months these deals are basically dead in the water now. Or unless you plan on using them as a Wi-Fi only device which I suppose could be practical for these Motorola phones since they have headphone jacks and SD cards.

So I mean you could do worse than a Moto G stylus 2025 as a music player but. ... Just terrible he depressing anti-consumer news again from the current FCC

It's too late as of today Verizon no longer has to do the 60 day unlocking because they were giving away her from the current FCC. I mean I'm sure word will get around on these comments sections but I do wonder what's going to happen to edge cases people that bought a phone a week ago or two weeks ago or whatever. Anecdotally I can say my Moto G Stylus 2025 that I bought in November seems to have been automatically unlocked in the sense that when I switched my infamobile SIM card over it still works. So far anyway.

But boy I mean I bought that maybe 80 days ago. I don't know what happens to people that bought a phone a week ago or yesterday. I don't know if the grandfathering in of the 60 day is the date of purchase or the date of activation or the date of delivery.

The worst part is the FCC didn't give them any restrictions at all so far as I could tell in the judgment. It wasn't like 60 days isn't going to work but no more than 180 days or no more than 120 days. Just a complete placating to the telecom industry.

Thank you so much. It's very helpful and informative. As I learnt:
- Don't have to be continuous service.
- Refill/activate the 2nd month plan yourself.
- Restart/Reset the phone after all.

I wonder if this would work with Total Wireless and their $10 plan? I also wonder if the new rules affect things, as does rebranding 'reset' the activation to after the FCC deadline or does it still account as the earlier activation?

Yeah, Moto G Stylus (2023) should work since it's still on Android 14. I'm hoping Motorola will have a fix in place for the next update. Otherwise, it looks like I'll have to use my old phone for a while longer.

For your second phone, I'd recommend avoiding Wi-Fi to prevent automatic updates using your cellular/mobile data without your consent.

Just tested with my work Verizon post-paid SIM and it's won't work (says Network Locked).
So, in short, avoiding Wi-Fi will keep a phone from doing a critical update? I would like to be able to be the decider as to whether I want to receive the update. Living without Wi-Fi on a locked device, however, is a non starter.

My Moto G Stylus 2025 purchased in Nov has successfully unlocked. I purchased first month on Straight Talk as part of the initial order, waited in Dec with no service, and rebranded to Tracfone in Jan and just now started the $15 one month service (declined autopay discount). Phone has unlocked since I fulfilled the two conditions: 60ish days passed since service activation and I purchased 2 months of service on the Tracfone family brands.

Guide for rebranding to Tracfone

Centers operate from 8 AM to 11:45 PM (EST) 7 days a week.
1-800-867-7183
Total Time: 15 min call
Have your ST phone turned on, and call from a different phone if your ST service is inactive.

Hold for English
Phone Number: Don't Have One
IMEI: Don't Have One
You need Phone Number or IMEI: Agent
Try this again: Agent
One last time: Agent

To the agent: Hi ____, can you please rebrand my Straight Talk phone to Tracfone so I can use Tracfone service?

Agent will ask for IMEI of ST phone and last 4 digits of the SIM card. They will send a 2FA verification pin to the ST number, which you can get even without active service. They will offer you to choice to keep the ST number or get a new number (I kept mine, not sure if it matters). After they complete rebranding, they will move on to activating service with the phone. You can activate with the agent or activate yourself (tell them you have a service card at home / away from you or make up another excuse).

My phone didn't automatically unlock on day 60 and 2 service months purchased even though the Tracfone unlock portal confirmed it was eligible for unlocking. I tried other SIMs, tried wifi, waited a couple of days, nothing worked. Before calling Tracfone, I decided to factory reset my phone since I debloated all of the crap apps. Upon the first start, with only cell service, the phone showed unlocked in settings. So if you debloated and confirmed that your Tracfone is eligible for unlocking but it hasn't unlocked, you may have to factory reset.
One takeaway here is that rebranding does NOT require a new SIM.

Another is that 60 days must pass after activation, and 2 30-day plans must be purchased. You have not completed 60 days of service yet, you have completed over 60 days since activation. What this means is that the rest of us can check our unlock as soon as we put our second month on as long as 60 days has passed since initial activation. Now, is it possible to rebrand to ANY Verizon Value Brand? If so, would be great for us that got the 365-day shaft. BTW, 12 x 30 =360, FYI.

I wonder it too. I haven't done it. Need someone's done that successfully after the "new rule" to chip in to save some money. Thanks.

They just changed the policy so no one knows if rebranding now affects the unlock time.

Just because something worked before doesn't mean it still works the same way - Verizon is known for making changes without notice (ex: last April's retroactive policy change).

Only you can decide if it's worth the chance for your 60 days to possibly become a year.

Correct

Correct. With the new requirement it'll be 12 months or more time post activation.

Correct, 2 months or more purchased. With the new requirement it'll be 12 months or more purchased.

Correct. The two independent requirements for unlocking is 1) a timer of 2 months has passed since activation, and 2) purchase(s) of 2 or more months service time. With the new unlocking criteria, I would assume they keep these two requirements, just changing to 12 months timer and 12 months purchase(s).

AFAIK, any Tracfone family brand can be rebranded to another Tracfone family brand. Verizon Prepaid and Visible aren't, but given the success of unofficially using Visible service these Tracfone locked phones, a SDer should ask Visible to rebrand officially. I doubt just sticking a Visible SIM card into a Tracfone would count towards the two unlocking requirement if all this isn't tracked and configured in Tracfone's backend DB. My Tracfone's have been unlocked, so I can't help here.

Just turn on WiFi, its still gonna automatically download security/critical updates regardless of if you turn off wifi or smart updates, if you can check this by going into system-smart updates (mine is still off) scroll all they way down its says "For your safety, all important security updates will download automatically whether this feature is on or off" it will still download on mobile data

You can only delay/deffer Major OS updates like A14-15 or A15-16, but you will get annoying nagging upgrade notification.

You could remove the Motorola software update app via shizuku+canta, but I haven't tried that.

Thank oregon14. And we don't know if the "rebrand" unlocking works or not after 30days. Tough gamble.

I didn't know the unlock policy was changing. I bought Tracfone phone late December but didn't activate it until Jan 21. What bad luck. I would have activated it sooner had I any idea about this. It has a year of service, so I guess I'll just have to stick with my current phone on my main service for a year.

An iPhone 12 mini that I purchased and activated back in November with a 3 month plan became eligible for unlocking on Saturday, as confirmed on https://www.tfwunlockpolicy.com/. But it is still locked as of today. The website said it would take 2~3 business days to process. Not sure if this is a (new?) Straight Talk process, but I had experience with Tracfone before and the unlocking was pretty much instant once eligibility was satisfied.
I tried to call the unlocking department number 3 times on Saturday but was put on hold for more than 10 minutes each time without anyone picking up my call. I was connected to rep this morning and she basically told me to wait till Wednesday for processing. Is this new or has it been always like that?
Anyway, the good old days with Tracfone brands are officially over! If you're looking to buy a device but don't mind waiting for a year, Metro might be a better option. I had an iPhone 13 from Metro unlocked this month automatically - I activated it a year before without even opening the box!

Umm, that Reddit link has nothing to do with locked Straight Talk phones at all.

my 12 Mini purchased this past Nov 10 with the 3 month plan unlocked this month on Jan 11. Do a restart and check in settings, about, and scroll down to Carrier Lock.

is there a way to pay for just one of the phone lines? Its trying to combine my bill so both of my phones have the same ending date (currently one phone ends 1/27 and the other one ends 2/2) but I ain't paying an extra month for one phone because they want to combine my plan ending dates
