No comment on the price. But if you spring for an R7, look into the excellent firmware mod by user mithheru on rdforum.org. Incredible feature set that exceeds even the R8. The R8 does have better hardware, though.

I've had much better luck relying on the kindness of strangers. Google Maps and Waze are pretty damn good about crowd-sourcing warnings of radar-wielding police on freeways.

Cops enforce traffic violations anymore? Not where I live. The number of red light runners is absurd. I was hit by one last year. Many times these things lead to life and death situations.

Are there any reputable brands that have rechargeable units? I hate having the power cord hanging down and don't know anyone (that I trust) who can hide the cable.

R7/R8 regularly win all H2H tests even against Escort and Valentine. Agree with most above, good radar detector, Waze and situational awareness and you should be good.
