About this Book:
  • You know what's worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And you know what's worse than that? An alien invasion, the destruction of all man-made structures on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of all the survivors for a sadistic intergalactic game show. That's what.
  • Join Coast Guard vet Carl and his ex-girlfriend's cat, Princess Donut, as they try to survive the end of the world—or just get to the next level—in a video game–like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that's actually the set of a reality television show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magical potions. Deadly, drug-dealing llamas. This ain't your ordinary game show.

I had never heard of this before, but it sounds exactly the kind of bonkers crazy I like.

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, this is the best voice acting out there IMO. It's amazing to think 1 guy does all of the voices(there is at least 1 guest actor in a later book for some small parts).

It's not at all the type of story I usually enjoy, but I read the first book on the recommendation of a friend, and got sucked in...I think I finished the series over an extended vacation. Currently, going through it again on Audible while I commute to work (because I had to take a break from my political podcasts...too depressing, lol.

Very entertaining series. Not something that's going to be on the recommended reading list at an Ivy League college anytime soon, but not everything has to be. It was fast paced, well written, funny, sometimes touching, and over the top violent. Not sure if this is a good price for the hardcover, but I'd for sure recommend picking the whole series up on Kindle for when you want a nice escape.

If I had to come up with something to compare it to, the closest thing I can think of would be the "Fallout" or "The Boys" on Amazon...they're a similar mix of action, violence, and dark humor, and similar genres, but nothing I've consumed before is a really exact fit.

Mongo approves.

HIGHLY recommend this book. However, the Audiobook version is much better. It has arguably the greatest voice acting performance in audiobook history.

This is such a fun and beautifully written collection! The audiobook enriches the story, too.

Yes this series is really hyped up. But if any series deserves it, its this one. I'm waiting patiently for the next book and I'm going to start the audio books here soon. If you're looking for something similar while you wait for the last book check out He Who Fights With Monsters(complete series with 12 books) and Discount Dan(ongoing series with 2 books). DCC was my first foray into the "LitRPG" genre and I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to dip my toes in!

Warning. Highly addictive. I started and finished my first listen of all 7 books in 2 months end of last winter. Then a month later I relistened to all of them in may. Then come October i listened to all of them again. The next book comes out this summer. I'll relisten again before that.
Ocd!!!

I'm glad people like the series but it just didn't do anything for me and I had no desire to continue after book one.

This is a book that must be "read" on Audible. The narration takes the series up a level.
