As much as people like to rag on North Face (and VF Corp), they make a solid product. I see a ton of undergrads using this or similar. I prefer Osprey (for the lifetime guarantee) but these work great.

I'm in college & these are reliable / don't fray. Have had mine since high school and have gone on multiple international trips with it. Nothing about it being a status symbol.

Like that color combination. Colors reminds me of my college days at the University of Arizona.

Yes because NF is also a "status symbol". Is this news to you or do you think most undergrads are also seasoned outdoors people ? shake head

It's almost completely about a status symbol for the example they gave and the place they specifically mentioned but thanks for interjecting.
Of course, no worries! Just providing another perspective as a college student as to why these bags are so popular.

Project farm did a backpack review and this one and others were on his list. If I remember correctly it wasn't the best pick or best value but ended up in the 1/3 upper tier. It did well with drop protection

Uh, everyone is downvoting but, he's not 100% incorrect. Maybe here it's just another outdoors functional gear products manufacturer but it's well known for having it's "status" and hype, specially in countries other than US.

It seemed like the pick of the pack that he tested at the midrange $100 price point. Not competing quite with the premium $170+ options and settling for taking third place overall, but outperforming the others near $100, while not offering the value of one in the $34 range. Seems like a deal to get it at $50 is worth considering. I checked if they had other offerings with a similar sale going on and went with the recon though. (Which probably deserves a listing here if this one does. Same -50% deal for the same color going on.)
