This HP Omen Max stands out as a high powered gaming laptop with an RTX 5070 Ti, Core Ultra 7 255HX, and a 140 watt GPU, and the configurable 64GB memory and Wi Fi 7 options make it more appealing as a desktop replacement. The stronger build and cooling are framed as a step above some competing gaming laptops, and the OLED upgrade is tempting if the price lands right. The main knocks are the 16 inch Full HD panel and the 512GB SSD, which feel undersized for the class. Deal pricing also proved unstable, with price changes and cancellations tied to a promotional error.
The laptop can be configured with up to 64GB DDR5 RAM, which helps with multitasking workloads.
The configured options can include an OLED display and higher-capacity SSD, which may better match gaming and storage needs.
The Wi‑Fi card can be upgraded from Intel Wi‑Fi 6E AX211 to Intel Wi‑Fi 7 BE200 for a small add-on.
The deal math can reach the advertised target price when promo code NEWYEAR26 is applied with free shipping.
HP orders can be cancelled due to a promotional error, and HP may refuse to honor the original price paid.
Accessory-based discount stacking can fail, and some orders show higher base pricing than the advertised starting point.
The Full HD panel is described as a garbage panel, and Windows 11 may require replacement or switching to Linux.
The 512GB SSD capacity is criticized as inadequate for 2026, which may force an upgrade sooner than expected.

Also that MSI has a low TDP 5070 ti in it. 115 watts instead of the full bore 140 watts in this HP omen max.
TL;DR I wouldn't buy that MSI over a Omen at the same price with a 5070 in it, much less an Omen Max with a 5070 ti.
Yeah maybe I don't have this offer... I know Amex offers are targeted. I don't see it under "Amex Offers".
When opening applications the SSD is the bottleneck. When running games the GPU is generally the bottleneck. When downloading files or browsing the web your Internet connection is the bottleneck. When you have multiple apps/browser tabs open at once the RAM size is the bottleneck. When you transcode video you'll likely be using the dedicated transcoding hardware on the iGPU or dGPU. When running local AI models the GPU VRAM is the bottleneck.
I'm not saying there aren't applications that will benefit from higher CPU performance (such as compressing large files), but for the typical person buying a gaming laptop, a slightly faster CPU will make no noticeable impact.
I wish the manufacturers would give the Linux option.
MSI = Mostly Shoddy Internals?

Linux, on a gaming laptop...
my server runs Linux, nothing else does, for reason... it's still hot garbage for daily/personal use.
1,278$ with the OLED panel, 1TB SSD and WiFi7 card.
