512GB is an insult in 2026.

Community Reviews

This HP Omen Max stands out as a high powered gaming laptop with an RTX 5070 Ti, Core Ultra 7 255HX, and a 140 watt GPU, and the configurable 64GB memory and Wi Fi 7 options make it more appealing as a desktop replacement. The stronger build and cooling are framed as a step above some competing gaming laptops, and the OLED upgrade is tempting if the price lands right. The main knocks are the 16 inch Full HD panel and the 512GB SSD, which feel undersized for the class. Deal pricing also proved unstable, with price changes and cancellations tied to a promotional error.

Thanks for that insight. My hang-up is, I'm reading that the Ryzen in the MSI is more powerful (it'll be plugged in at all times), but it only has 16gb of RAM. I can configure this one to have 64gb for a negligible amount, but it's got the Intel, which I'm reading is slower (although much more efficient). This would be a non-issue if RAM wasn't currently a bajillion dollars...
Cannot stress enough how across the board awful MSI gaming laptop quality is and has been for at least 8 years now.

Also that MSI has a low TDP 5070 ti in it. 115 watts instead of the full bore 140 watts in this HP omen max.

TL;DR I wouldn't buy that MSI over a Omen at the same price with a 5070 in it, much less an Omen Max with a 5070 ti.

Actually, it looks like the Intel is generally faster for both single and multi threaded work. Even the Intel iGPU is faster than the one in the Ryzen. https://www.notebookcheck.net/Int...333.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD...310.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/Int...932.0.html https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD...293.0.html
I appreciate the legwork on those articles. I'll grab this one. Thank you!

I don't see this anywhere... where is it? (I just got an Amex Platinum, so I'm new to the website).

Yeah maybe I don't have this offer... I know Amex offers are targeted. I don't see it under "Amex Offers".

Does the CPU performance really matter to you that much?

When opening applications the SSD is the bottleneck. When running games the GPU is generally the bottleneck. When downloading files or browsing the web your Internet connection is the bottleneck. When you have multiple apps/browser tabs open at once the RAM size is the bottleneck. When you transcode video you'll likely be using the dedicated transcoding hardware on the iGPU or dGPU. When running local AI models the GPU VRAM is the bottleneck.

I'm not saying there aren't applications that will benefit from higher CPU performance (such as compressing large files), but for the typical person buying a gaming laptop, a slightly faster CPU will make no noticeable impact.
For Win11, the CPU is the bottleneck.
I wish the manufacturers would give the Linux option.

So in other words,
MSI = Mostly Shoddy Internals?

lol...
Linux, on a gaming laptop...

my server runs Linux, nothing else does, for reason... it's still hot garbage for daily/personal use.

This HP is just a better quality laptop, even if you don't care about the battery and weight.
That's more damning towards MSI than praise for HP.

True. Can you think of a major brand that has a worse reputation for their low to mid range gaming laptops?

When I buy a Windows laptop, the first thing I do is format and then install either Windows or Linux. If you want Linux on your laptop, install it. Even if they did offer the option, it's not as if they'd be installing your Linux flavor of choice.

MSI is consistently the worst. The only other name that comes to mind is Acer. Their track record is very spotty.

Thanks for the input. I bought the one posted here based on your advice. Bumped up the RAM to 64gb, went with the faster 1TB SSD, Wifi 7 and decided to go with the OLED (it was like $80 more with all of the coupons bringing the price down, so I figured why not). All in, it was like ~$1500 before tax. I picked the cheapest gaming headset they had ($30) to get the 10% off with an accessory promotion to trigger.

The gold standard is Asus G and Lenovo 7i for quality and cooling system for heavy gaming non-stop. Starting at $1,800
Sliver is this HP omen and Acer Nitro. Starting at $1200 or less with credit card promo stacking
It comes with dual channel ram, optional 1600p ips. Top 1% slickdeal
Lowest quality is MSI, Gigabyte
