The 26TB Seagate Expansion Desktop is drawing attention as a cheap source of large-capacity storage, especially for shucking into NAS builds or using as cold backup space. The enclosure has been getting real-world transfer reports around 240 to 250 MB per second over USB 3, and some setups run Plex or media storage fine when the drive is not the bottleneck. The main cautions are noise, heat, and uncertainty about what drive is inside, with reports of Barracuda or HAMR based units and warnings that it is not rated for 24/7 NAS use. The micro USB B connector and awkward shucking process also stand out. A practical pick for bulk storage if you can live with the quirks.

In terms of just using the Plex app a $25 Roku or Firestick will work just as well as a more expensive Apple TV. You just need a newer device to handle the app/streaming from your plex server. The internal OS of your TV is what's slowing you down. I have the same issue with my older Roku OS TVs, but when we use the stand alone plug in Roku device the Plex app is fast as hell.
Thanks! Out of curiosity, what makes the Apple TV device so expensive in comparison to all the other sticks and media devices available? Is the hardware better, or is it simply because it's another Apple product? The device is pretty heavy from what I recall, which makes me wonder, especially since the sticks are so much cheaper in comparison and deliver the exact output quality.

Combination of things.
It's a nice device, and it has relatively good processing power. However, there's obviously a heavy Apple tax on it too.
Personally, I try to avoid Apple products due to their constant attempt at walling you in. So far I've failed miserably, as I own a MacBook Pro (although it has Windows on it and I dual boot), an iPad and a spare iPhone. That said, my main is Windows/Surface/NUC13 Extreme and Pixel 6a phone with iPad as tablet and occasionally using Surface Book 3.

Remember when good ol' BG said who ever needs more than 640MB? I think there's a few of us here who do.
By BG, I'm assuming Bill Gates?
It was 640KB and he didn't actually say it. There's a level we can get where we are unlikely to use up storage or even processing power. I feel storage we're getting closer, because at some point you can't consume all the data, and the data we generate don't take as much to store. Location data, emails, books, audio and now even video. Like 4k is so good that when you go 8k or 16k, it's negligible difference.

I can't imagine a single person storing 26TB of music for instance unless they store it raw with very high bit-rate. Computing power on the other hand?

Yeah, we can use that up still. That said, in many instances that's also leveling out. Not like you need uber computer to edit spreadsheets, type out essays (or is it AI doing it?) or browse the internet.

Mine arrived today and I'm having real problems trying to shuck it. Lots of videos out there which suggest finding a corner and thin razor type blade underneath and eventually putting in a guitar pick and then working it all the way around. The problem is I just can't seem to find a corner edge to open up. Western Digital drives are so much easier to shuck. I wish I never bought this and waited for a WD deal

In for 2 to shuck. It's for a plex server so no biggie if the drives eventually fail since not critical data.
Sadly drive prices trending up instead of down. Hell... SPD USED drives now going for $450!!! Madness.

For those trying to shuck it. I finally opened it up. A strong craft knife along the middle did the trick. Then I was able to get a guitar pick in and then a flathead screwdriver did the rest

Thanks! Would you say Apple TV 4k or whatever they have now is one of the best powerful ones in terms of handling UHD, 4K content? I've been considering apple tv for a while now, not sure what the big difference is between that and a firestick 4k or other devices, but I haven't educated myself on it. I stream everything in original format, its just the nav menu and booting up takes forever, once the movie loads its fine.. I have money so if Apple TV is better, I'll invest in it.
Yeah the Apple TV box is super fast and ad free. I've been looking to get another to replace an old Roku but having a hard time finding them. My best guess is there is another model on the way? Might check out eBay to see if there are any deals there.

I'd advise against shucking, did it and regretted it 4 months later. At least use it externally until the warranty expires
What happened? I'm assuming one or more of the drives failed.

I picked up four 22 TB two weeks ago and shucked them last weekend. All Exos inside.

I discovered some of the videos were leading me to the wrong side. Seagate must have changed things up. You need to target the side with the logo. I used a box cutter and slid the edge under.

I've been out of the loop for a while, is having all Exos inside a good thing?
