I have it aswell, about 10years of light usage. I say it uses the casing itself for thermal dessipition. So thats a +, it wont burn you though

seems this one has been around for long time. Some people complain about heat of device, and over the years ... sandisk seems to lower quality. I did read the reviews on amazon to get a feel for this device. It fits some devices and I'll let everybody make their own decisions. I'm going to pass on this, ...lately I like samsung microSD that can be put into usb 3 or usb c card readers and get fast speeds.

if you use these often enough, the heat may contribute to a shorter life span. we had a batch of these in moderate usage and they seem to randomly die once you got a few years on them. other flash drives with similar use conditions didn't seem to suddenly die as often (or at all) over the years.

Almost pulled the trigger but at this point if I'm going to get a new flash drive I probably want something that can do USB-C too for quick transfer of files off my phone.

... yep! That is why I mentioned I bought samsung microSD cards 256 or 516gb ones, some that came with usb 3 tiny card reader, or usb c card reader. This gave me 3 ways to use the microSD card, put in smartphone that has slot for microSD card, or put in smart phones that have usb c option, or put in PC, or cars, or hdtv's ... using one of the 3 options. And the samsung speeds are better than sandisk. For me, microSD cards, give me the peace of mind to use in all types of ways.

I hear that about all the San Disk drives. Good price and nice design but going to pass because of the heat issue. Samsung makes one that looks just like this and works nicely. Not nearly this cheap though https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BA...r=8-1&th=1

Does it stay hot at all times, like when it's just been plugged in for an hour and you've done no read and no write with it in the past hour?

Yeah, I use a few of these for work. They're great and nearly indestructible. One down side though is the size tolerances are pretty unforgiving. Some laptops are just a millimeter off on their USB ports, and because this drive is make out of solid aluminum it will not fit. Other drives with the thin aluminum interface are more mailable and fit in no problem. Just a weird quirk.

Still going to buy a couple more though.

EDIT: or not...sold out Frown

Just when it's transferring data. It's not "too hot to touch" but it's around the same temp as a warm laptop.

I have the 512GB version. It gets really hot but probably because of the all-metal construction acting as a heat sink. Great build quality with extremely disappointing performance in my experience. It's unusable if you're doing even mild I/O work. It feels like the cache fills up and takes FOREVER to commit to non-volatile memory where the progress bar shoots forward then takes an ages-long break. I can't tell if it's thermal throttling or what contributes to the poor performance. I use Linux exclusively but that's never been a problem before. I don't know if I'd buy the 512GB version even at this price. YMMV, it's a gamble in my opinion.
