I share your frustration. Instead of using the link provided for the direct checkout, go to the product page:
[I have not actually verified this, but the direct checkout link made me jump thru hoops to get the deal e.g., select a new payment method click, select quanity 4 (not the default 3), THEN enter the promo code, make sure S&S, refresh the page to see the new checkout, then actually checkout
