Absolutely worth it. If you love retro games I've had one for a year now I play it a few times a week. Highly recommend.

My kid dropped his a few times, a quarter sized black spot appeared on the screen and it's growing.

I use a controller with my phone/tablet as they are considerably more powerful than these budget handhelds, but I've been looking at picking one up for my kids.

Nobody can really answer that. Did you play a lot of 8-bit and 16-bit games long ago that you'd like to play again, along with more recent PS1 content? Was it before your time and you'd like to experience it? You can get an emulator package for your PC for free to see if you like the old games or not. If you do, this is a well made and presented means to have those games in a portable format. I like having some stuff separate from my phone so that I'm not concerned about running down the battery on a critical device. I have a low end recent Samsung that was effectively given to me I set up as an audio and game player for that reason. I still have books and games on my primary phone but I like having the fall back for longer trips.

Yeah it's worth having a handheld that can play games up to Playstation and even most n64 & some psp games. With the anbernic handhelds, you'll want to replace the sd card with a branded one from Samsung or SanDisk. This can be done with either cloning it or doing a fresh installation. Pretty easy to do.

Anbernic also had horizontal form factor handhelds as well such as the rg40xxh or cubexx for a bit more.

Really depends. If you have a time during the day when you normally doomscroll (lunch, before bed, on the bus etc) then these are an awesome alternative.

Also, I grew up with a lot of this era of games (Genesis, SNES, Game Boy) so I've always had a bunch of games from that era I've wanted to playthrough. I've tried emulating the games on my phone, but ultimately get distracted by emails, Instagram etc

I have a couple of these RG35xx line from anbernic. Very solid portable retro game device. Plays games up to PS1ish generation but don't think it's the best. This device is ideal for the 8 and 16-bit games. Would advise to flash your own custom firmware (Knulli is one of the most recommended for these devices).

If you already a 3-inch handheld then I'd hold out for a sale on the RG40XXV, it's my favorite in the handheld pile.

To get a good custom OS and ROM experience with a huge library of games then yes... you'll need to be able to format and prep one or two microSD cards. You might be able to find pre-loaded cards to buy on eBay or other spot, but a lot of the fun is in the setup and in ROM collection.

The RGXX series by Anbernic has HDMI out, WiFi and Bluetooth, making it a very versatile option. The overall build quality is a bit better than the R36. If you're really looking for an upgrade, you might prefer the larger RG40XX V or H with a 4" screen.

My personal favorite vertical device is the Retroid Pocket Classic, but that's a $150 device that runs on Android.

What's better about the RG40XXV, I was thinking about picking up this deal. I really would to play n64 games and will pay more if it's needed.
