Aren't these things so cheap because they break so much? Or is that a different model? Either way, make sure this thing doesn't store the only copy of something important.

In 2023 their Extreme and Extreme Pro lines (at least) had a sudden-death issue [tomshardware.com] from components coming off the board as they heated up during use. Not sure if this model was an affected one, since it's not an Extreme. Presumably newer designs won't repeat the same costly mistake.

I don't care what type of device you're using or what brand it is, if you only have one copy of something important, you're doing it wrong.

When it comes to external hard drives, Seagate is the one company that DOESN'T do any hardware encryption in the USB to SATA adapter board. So, if the enclosure fails, you can shuck the drive out and get at your data through other means. I've had so many Western Digital enclosures fail while the drives inside were still just fine, but when that happens, your data is still toast because it's encrypted and can only be decrypted by the failed enclosure board.
On 2.5" size external hard drives, Seagate also still uses SATA drives inside, while WD natively has USB on them, again making data recovery impossible if the USB controller goes.
Disks are cheap. The right answer is backups and redundancy; a drive failure should be an annoyance to spend a little time restoring a backup to a new drive, and never a catastrophe where you lose something irreplaceable (if that happens, you're doing it wrong).

These things die out of nowhere for no reason. For $35 it's not bad.. but pay attention as it's basically self insulated and will overheat to fail point before you know it's even hot.

Not so! The procedure, after pulling the disk out, is to make note of the chip on the board, then head to a site such as this one [github.com] (I like best) to see if it's listed, then follow the instructions for that chip (some are common to many).

It's a great feeling to extract your own key and decrypt the data yourself, being able to copy everything exactly as it was to a new drive. The source drive can then be reformatted and used like normal.

That is awesome! (But still doesn't excuse the horribly flaky enclosures).
