On 2.5" size external hard drives, Seagate also still uses SATA drives inside, while WD natively has USB on them, again making data recovery impossible if the USB controller goes.
Disks are cheap. The right answer is backups and redundancy; a drive failure should be an annoyance to spend a little time restoring a backup to a new drive, and never a catastrophe where you lose something irreplaceable (if that happens, you're doing it wrong).

It's a great feeling to extract your own key and decrypt the data yourself, being able to copy everything exactly as it was to a new drive. The source drive can then be reformatted and used like normal.
