FWIW, Amazon is just matching the Home Depot price.

Thanks for the heads up. I added it to the post. I prefer Amazon, personally, since I get 5% cashback with Amazon Prime Store Card. 👍

This thing is a beast. Love it and would jump if I didn't already have one. It is very heavy so not easily moved without the cart.

As someone new to sawing and trying to fix stuff at home. Should I get a compound miter saw or a table saw?

Bruh I'm in the exact same boat, and I even ordered the big ass Hercules miter saw from HF. However, during the month long waiting, still not available for pick-up, I've diven into it more and decided that table saw it's actually fitting more of my needs.

Basically, table saw with jigs can somewhat accomplish what miter saw can do at a lot slower pace, but not vice versa, at least safely. Speaking of safety, table saw is lot more dangerous imo, but manageable with disciplines. Given the cost and spatial limitations, I jumped ship to table saw since I cannot get both for now.

That being said, if you do not need to rip cut or make furnitures (medium to big siz), miter saw is completely fine. Just be aware if buying the sliding ones, must calculate in the space needed for the rail unless it has a front slider.

Another thing I learned, tho way too late, is that don't just keep buying power tools, try some small projects with hand tools first and see if you really enjoy doing them. I spent too much time "studying and admiring on YouTube" than actually building stuff...

They both are pretty important, but I would lean towards a miter saw first. Also, if you are inexperienced, a table saw can be a little tricky/dangerous. If you have a circular saw, it will do a lot of what a table saw does, and it easier to store.

I was in the same boat and decided to get a miter saw first. For the few times I saw myself making long cuts it made more sense to buy a track and use it as a guide with my circular saw. Less cost, easier to store and waaay safer. Table saws and jointers are the main source of severe injuries in DIY settings. I decided "why take the risk?"

Great miter saw. You can upgrade this with the shadow light and make it a 780. Good (easy) upgrade and I think it's worth it.

Circular saws are prone to binding just by their mechanics. These saws are very dangerous, kicking back and jumping the cut. Working efficiently requires discipline to a routine that can be cumbersome if you're working against the clock. Without a proper guide cuts will be close but never exact or worse so detail work is very difficult to do. I have an old direct drive skill saw that I hated using I picked up a Makita hypoid or gear drive saw and it changed my life. Powerful, smooth, geometry works to limit binding but this saw is nearly 15 lbs. heavy after a long day, I bought mine nearly new from an estate sale, it's the magnesium version, a half pound lighter, it plugs in which is my preference for most tools other than drills. I lost it for a short while, the homeowner at a job site moved behind some things to move a car, I was packing up and missed it. I couldn't remember exactly where I had last used it. Started looking for another one when I got another job from the same person and when I arrived they said I something for you. They thought it was cute or funny I guess, I told them I almost popped $300 for another one. I'm not a framer but I love that saw. Makita uses lifetime hypoid lubricant whereas the skill and other worm drives do not which is great/ no maintenance.

Totally agree. I added that to mine. Really easy install. Took me about 20 minutes.

If you're considering the 779 and want to do the shadow line upgrade kit, the 780 has been $499 on Amazon for the last few months.

A table saw is pretty much the heart of any shop. Miter saws can only do a few things really well, a table saw can do most of those things just fine with homemade jigs. It is very difficult to make a long repeated cuts with anything but a table saw. For other stuff, like breaking down sheet goods, just use a circular saw or track saw. With a small job site table saw and used circular/track saw you can make almost anything with enough dedication. I started out the same way. Now I have table saw, track saw, miter saw, band saw, various dovetail/pull saws, along with a router table, planer, jointer. The others are not critical, just nice to have on hand to speed up operations. It starts with fixing little things around this house and suddenly you find yourself making jewelry boxes, picture frames, and bathroom vanities. Fun and addictive stuff, if you've got the room and the funds!

Realistically, if you are serious about DIY and woodworking, you'll need both. I would consider starting with this miter saw and then looking for a Dewalt 7491RS table saw on sale. Together, you'll be set for the next decade.

Agreed. Same at Home Depot. Not worth doing the upgrade when you can just buy it already built for the same end price.
