Why is this product (hand warmers) suddenly emerging? Never saw these growing up

I am 27. I've used, and seen others use hand warmers since I was about 8. The chemical ones were the ones we used for the longest time. If you spend hours outdoors in the winters, they are well known.

Hand warmers used to be mainly limited to those disposable things where you break something inside of the packaging and they got warm for a few hours. So this isn't something new.

Putting on my speculating hat...
These are emerging in part because of the rise in popularity of USB power banks. As USB power banks increase in capabilities, the cost to produce them goes down. Especially for tech that is a little behind what is cutting edge. It may even be somewhat like medication going from name-brand to generic. Eventually it becomes cheap to produce something similar and almost as good as the original.

If you'll notice, not only do these charge similar to how you'd charge a USB power bank, but some of the better versions of these double as power banks. People don't like being cold. And for $10 or even $20, a reusable warmer sounds like a good deal. They also in a great "impulse buy" and "stocking stuffer" price range.

Never thought this was something I wanted until I was gifted something similar a couple years ago. If you commute without a car and it's freezing out, it feels weirdly luxurious to be bundled up with heat on your hands. It's like I have a secret no one knows about and it's keeping me warm and safe.

I have a heated vest and a heated jacket. I don't feel a need to warm my car up while wearing either of them. Not as good as heated seats, but mine are cloth and don't transfer cold like leather. I just got three on the last deal.

I read somewhere that devices like these, battery fans, power banks use lithium batteries that don't make the cut to be used in EVs. They work, but just don't meet the specs for huge battery arrays. I wonder if they give them away to other companies rather than have to pay and recycle them.
