The QM5K stands out as a bright mini LED TV with strong black levels and color, delivering a lot of picture quality for the money. The 65 inch model has been called impressive in stores and solid in SDR, with recent firmware updates and built in Google TV features like art screensavers and news overlays. Audio is also described as loud enough for a bedroom without a soundbar. The main tradeoff is refresh rate, since 4K is limited to 60Hz even though 1440p can reach 144Hz, and the brightness can feel intense in dark rooms.

  • bedroom TV shoppers who want a bright, punchy picture without paying OLED prices because the 55" model is described as a good bedroom TV and owners say the QM5K is "a little brighter" than the QM6K with deep blacks and strong colors.

  • people who mainly watch SDR and don't care about chasing the highest HDR performance because one owner says the QM5K "hang right with my QM7's in SDR," and another notes it can't keep up in HDR but they "don't watch much HDR."

  • buyers who hate Google TV's interface but still want the TV's hardware value because commenters say you can bypass Google TV by using a Roku (or similar streaming device) and even recommend pairing it with an Apple TV for a much better experience than Google TV.

  • gamers who only need 1440p at up to 120Hz (and aren't chasing 4K 144Hz) because one commenter says they only need 120Hz/1440p for gaming and another clarifies the set supports 1440p up to 144Hz while 4K is limited to 60Hz.

  • home theater tinkerers who want extra on-screen features like overlays and art playback because owners mention a built-in screen saver with news/weather overlays and the ability to show art from TV storage, USB, Google, or AI art.

  • people who want a true 4K 144Hz gaming experience because the TV is described as 60Hz overall and commenters note 4K is limited to 60Hz (with 1440p up to 144Hz).

  • people who want to keep the TV at low volume and avoid eye strain because owners report it can be "too bright" and that on their QM5K they have to turn brightness down (and on certain content it causes their eyes to wince).

  • shoppers who specifically want to use the TV's smart platform for ad-blocking and sideloading because while one person likes Google TV for sideloading Firefox and using uBlock Origin, another commenter says they "loathe GoogleTV," implying it won't match everyone's preferences.

  • buyers who are sensitive to brightness changes at night because one shopper returned a Hisense for "constantly changing the brightness" and says they're worried about what to do with the QM5K given that prior experience.

  • buyers who need reliable built-in audio without any risk of speaker issues because one commenter asked about audio after their last unit had a broken screen and sounded "extremely boxy" with "no low end."

I'm still debating over this TV. I want a mini-led and only need 120hz 1440p for gaming. But I loathe GoogleTV. I returned a Hisense U65QF because of HDMI issues and constantly changing the brightness of it (too bright at night). What to do.
I own 2. DO IT. These hang right with my QM7's in SDR. Best value on the market right now. NO issues yet and we got a firmware update recently that made them even better (v490 I think?).

It's pretty loud. I have the 55" mounted on the wall in my bedroom and dont turn the volume up above 13 or so (out of 100.) At 13, my better half complains that its too loud.

The brightness is kind of the same way. The higher end TCLs (QM7K/8K/9K) are considerably brighter than this TV. On my QM5Ks, I have the brightness turned down to like 40% (these TVs are like 2-3x brighter than the 5 yr old cheap edge-lit TVs they replaced.) On certain content, it causes my eyes to wince so I'm not sure how folks deal with an even brighter tv. I'm sure it makes HDR content better, but IMO, it looks great on my QM5K (but I'm not super enthusiast.)
Agreed. I have brightness on 30 in dark room. That equals 20 on my QM7 so they aren't that much dimmer. Of course they can't keep up in HDR but I don't watch much HDR.

Yes. And they have a FANTASTIC screen saved built in. It can have news and weather overlays and even read you the headlines OR It can show your art from tv storage, art from USB, art from Google, AI created art, or you can use AI on the tv to create art. Sometimes the AI is laughable but other times it's really good. All free, may as well use it.

How big of an upgrade would this be from my sharp 60" from 2016 lol
Massive. I came from a 55" 4K HDR LED Sharp from 2018 with no local dimming. The Sharp cost MORE in 2018 than the TCL does now and the TCL is so much better.

TVs seems to be one of the few things in a deflationary pattern. My 50" and 55" QM5Ks (paid. $285-300) are not only significantly cheaper than the basic edge-lit 4k TVs I bought in 2020 (before you even consider inflation and tariffs) but are significantly better. It makes me wonder that if unless youre an enthusiast, it may be better just replacing a cheap TV every 5 years with another cheap TV over trying to future proof (and potentially spending a ton.) It seems like whatever cheap TV exists 5 yrs from now will likely blow away what is available now anyhow.

Now I just need to do some soul searching on the 85 or 98 TCL options. lol

RTings did an extended test [rtings.com]of all their tvs. TCL seemed to fair well.

For $100 difference, the Costco option is probably worth it. Free delivery. Longer warranty. 4K at 144hz capability (assuming you game.)

Buy this and put an Apple TV on it. (Or Roku or whatever). Put the Apple TV experience, especially if you are already in the ecosystem is 1 million times better than Google TV.

I realize this does 120hz 1440p on consoles but will it do it on a PC?
