This Tapo 2K wireless doorbell camera stands out for solid video and audio at a very low price, with local SD card recording and no yearly subscription. It can be powered by battery, wired, or even kept topped up with a USB C solar panel, and it works with the Tapo app and H500 hub. The main tradeoffs are uneven motion and person alerts, missing image previews in notifications, and no clear 24/7 recording support on the battery model. A compact option if you want affordable local recording and can live with some alert quirks.

Common Questions (5)

  • Battery life varies with activity, but reported use ranges from about 25% remaining after 4 months to roughly 70% after 2 months of a couple recordings per day. A wired setup avoids battery charging, and a solar panel can keep it topped up.

  • It can support 24/7 recording when powered from a wired source, and it may also work with a solar charger. The battery-powered setup does not offer nonstop recording, so continuous recording depends on using external power.

  • Storage depends on card size, resolution, and whether you record motion only or continuously. Examples reported include about 4.5 days on a 64GB card at 2K continuous recording, about 15 days on a 128GB card at 1080p continuous recording, and about 5 months on a 128GB card with motion-only recording.

  • No yearly subscription is needed; recordings can be saved to a microSD card in the camera. That makes it a lower-cost alternative to subscription-based doorbells like Ring.

  • Yes, it comes with an indoor chime unit that plugs in inside the house. It does not use your existing doorbell chime wiring, and if Wi‑Fi goes down the chime will not work.

In case it's a useful reference, I have the wired Kasa Doorbell Camera (also owned by TP-Link) with a 128GB microSD card, and with continuous recording at 1080p, I usually have about a rolling 15 days worth of recordings at any given time.
Also running the Kasa wired setup. 64GB card, 2k resolution gets me 4-1/2 days of running video.
I'm looking to replace the Kasa with a Tapo because although Kasa is accessible in the Tapo app, it's not fully integrated. Some features and settings are not available in the Tapo app and I can't set up Tapo "Smart Actions" in the Tapo app for the Kasa doorbell cam.

FWIW, I believe it supports 24/7 recording when plugged into power source, perhaps even a solar charger.
My Tapo solar powered cameras don't support 24/7 recording so I'm inclined to suspect this doorbell won't either.

So undecided. Will there be anything cheaper and or better? I don't really need it. I just want to put it in the front and back porches to spy on the cats and harass them. And I think it's kind of ugly and sticks out on a white backdrop.

Why is this advertised as WIRED in the Amazon title but is battery powered? I have existing 24V doorbell wiring I would like to use to avoid using a battery.
