With cordless power tools, it's all about the batteries and chargers. Find the line you like and try to stick with it. If your charger or battery dies and you can't find replacements, your tools are dead.
If you are going to do any serious work, you want to have 3 batteries and 2 chargers to start. I plug 2 chargers in and find the 2 batteries with least amount of charge and let it charge. Then I start working. When the battery depletes, I pick the battery with the most charge and use it and put my depleted battery in the charger. Unless you have insanely slow chargers or doing crazy work, i can last whole day without ever stopping.
As far as buying into a new battery ecosystem, that's no big deal if you have a regular need for this tool. I'll bet most dudes that use cordless tools are into multiple brands by now.
