What do you imagine a number plate has an intended use of?

Reason for obstructing plates online: the plate is one of the few uniquely discernible characteristics that make it a distinctive vehicle. Plates are used as a unique identifier, and when posting your any pictures online, they are there forever.
Some people like to reduce their digital footprint and have fewer things that may link them to their identity.

One potential risk: Once you sell your vehicle, the next owner has the potential to do all sorts of unscrupulous or illegal activities with it. Having less to link it the old owner to it means less likelihood they will get entangled in the investigation.

Go to the mall and look at all the plates as you wish. That doesn't link those plates to anyone in particular unless you took the deep dive to do so.

Tracking and surveillance in 2026 is absolutely wild. Having less of a digital presence isn't something that should be frowned upon if people want to protect their privacy.

Another potential risk:
In my area, plate numbers are frequently stolen and falsified to apply over other vehicles to evade tollbooths and bridge fares.

My neighbour had their plates duplicated and racked up thousands in toll violation fines.

Taking extra precautions to protect oneself is their prerogative.

Can this be used without the app? I don't want the Govee app on any of my devices.

You can but probably shouldn't since you'll need it to calibrate and other setups.

Like the people that sell their car online and proceed to block out the license plate with their thumb 😂

I can go to the mall and look at thousands of license plates. Still trying to figure out why people cover them up.

Has anyone tried this (the 3s) compared to the T3 Lite? They seem pretty similar. One forum said the 3s version is a Best Buy exclusive.

Who said anything about China?

Any intrusive app should be scrutinized. Your usage data is insightful, valuable, and profitable.

Familiar with the sudden influx of dynamic pricing models? Marketers use predictive analytics and behavioral targeting to modify their crosshairs on you.

Pretending like your use data isn't a precious commodity is outright ignorance. Part of the reason why so many of these products are subsidized to make them exceptionally affordable is because brands farm your usage data to sell to marketers and corporate entities.

As the simplified adage goes: "you are the product".

You talk about data farming like you aren't using a phone with a ton of apps that do that. The only way you keep your data offline is by going old school and using a flip phone from 2004.

I work for the state public safety. There's really nothing you can do with the license plate number without the access to the license plate database, and it's really well secured. Most states even restrict access to LPR (license plate reader) tech, never mind the database.
When you see some criminal getting caught 4 states over within a couple of days, that's almost always because of the LPR readers installed everywhere. But all the readers in the world are useless without the access to the network and the database.
And I've never heard a plate being remanufactured. And if that's an issue, they won't get it from a random Facebook Marketplace post. They'll go to the mall parking, and pick out the exact same make and model and color of a car, and remanufacture it.

China already have your data, but you're neither that important nor that rich compared to others yet.

There are some stated concerns regarding the govee app, however your smart tv is already probably selling you up the river. Many smart tv's will send images and audio snippets 'back home' even if it is your own input and an externa source- so they know what to sell you of course!
