This Eddie Bauer puffer is best understood as a lightweight, layerable jacket for cool to mildly cold weather, especially around town, in the car, or under a shell. The stretch side panels vent heat well and make it comfortable for active use, and the low price makes it feel like a solid value for short outings or 45 to 55 degree days. The main caveat is that the sides are not insulated, so warmth drops off in real cold, and several comments question the fill, fit, and overall build quality. It works best as a thin midlayer rather than a primary winter coat.

Common Questions (5)

  • No. The sides are stretch/spandex panels with little or no insulation, which improves mobility and reduces sweating but also lets in cold and lowers warmth compared with a fully insulated puffer.

  • It is described as a light, layerable jacket best for cool to mildly cold weather, roughly 45-55°F, and for short trips like house-to-car or errands. The non-insulated stretch sides make it less suitable for long outdoor exposure or very cold conditions.

  • Yes. It is described as a mid-layer with thin nylon meant to reduce bulk, and several comments recommend wearing it under a shell or work coat rather than as a primary winter jacket.

  • At $25, it is repeatedly described as a good buy for a lightweight layer, especially for errands, mild winter, or under a shell. It is not positioned as a premium warmth piece, but several comments say the price matches the build and use case.

  • The thread contains conflicting claims: some say the product page implies real down, while others say it is down alternative polyester fill. A separate comment says it is probably not the best-quality down but is not synthetic according to the product page, so the safest takeaway is to verify the exact fill before buying.

This jacket is NOT DOWN. It's "down alternative." Polyester fill.

Really disappointed in most EB stuff these days. Used to like them as a decent mid range bargain brand
Hmmm… should we wonder why?
Eddie Bauer brand is now owned by JC Penny among others. JC Penny filed for bankruptcy in May 2020.
Catalyst is a joint venture formed in an all-equity transaction between JCPenney and Sparc, with shareholders Simon Property Group, Brookfield Corporation, Authentic Brands Group and Shein. Sparc and Authentic Brands bought Eddie Bauer in 2021.

I have a Eddie Bauer 550 from several years ago purchase. I really like it. Nice weight and great light super packable jacket. If the temperature drops below freezing, put this on under a good work coat and you stay almost too warm. But that had down on the sides. Not sure on this design change.

My issue with this jacket when I bought it is that the gray color is more like light purple. I don't know if this is a different run, but it was not a masculine gray color.

Avoid this in particular. I bought two of them from the last sale back when we had the PP 20%. The sides where the shell ends and the stretchy nylon begins is really thin, not sure why they made that design choice. The down itself if I had to compare, 32 degree jackets slowly lose their fill, this one in particular I see feathers every time I wear it. Overall it's not that warm but the deal breaker would be the lack of quality. I mainly bought it because I needed something very thin but looking back it wasn't too worth it. Like other reviews, it's pretty bad. I'd skip entirely if possible.
I agree with this comment. It's worth $20 - $25. Good for 45-50 degree weather. Sides will bring in the cold. Want something warmer? Spend more.

Make sure to see the spandex sides. Not sure if they were to reduce cost or fashion misfire.

No, this jacket is down. It's stated numerous times on the product page, including in the name of the product

Gone downhill in quality for anything you wear. Housewares still fine.

EB CirrusLite [eddiebauer.com] - This is the 'standard' EB 650 Fill Power jacket... reasonably priced, reasonably warm.LLBean Ultrilight 850 [llbean.com] - If you can find this one on sale (I got it for under $60 before CB), it's great value for the money. 850FP and good fill weight (probably twice the fill weight of the Eddie Bauer). Very warm (and might be too warm, in certain circumstances).Other solid options out there for more technical gear (I own Mountain Hardwear and Patagonia down as well)... can be a bargain if you find them on-sale. Particularly like MH StretchDown.
I picked up the 650 cirrus a few years back and am happy with it. Wore it over a hoodie and felt comfortable all day in 30 degree weather over a long sleeve shirt

This jacket is designed to help keep you warm while doing activities. It stretches with you. It works. Otherwise I don't find it very warm if not doing something very active.

Agreed... I own one as well... over a turtle neck and under my ski shell on reasonably temp days.
