You really should not be taking more than 1mg of this stuff. It starts to have reverse effects and ruins your natural production at high doses.

beware. this brand is well known for supplying much more melatonin per dose than the label claims, and maybe even worse, the amount of variability is pretty crazy: https://www.tga.gov.au/safety/saf...n-products

^ This. It's crazy to me that 10mg is so popular. I started melatonin at 5mg and it never helped me go to sleep. Once I learned that the higher the dose was worse, I chopped those in half and had 2.5mg. I noticed HUGE difference for the better. Start low. Stay low.

What is considered a high dose, if you happen to know.?

I'm no expert but have been taking melatonin for years. Anything above 2mg is pretty high, and even 2mg is a large dose than needed. Somewhere between .3-1 mg is enough, you would have to try for yourself and experiment what works for you.

Thank you for positing. I used these before and found some days I'd wake up really groggy/brain fog. This could definitely be the culprit. I'm curious if you know of brands that have better quality control?

I'm pretty sure the main issue is the gummy version (including if any supplement). ConsumerLab tested the 5mg tablets and while it wasn't spot on, it was only about 10% off (5.6mg).
Having said that, I don't take more than 1mg, and I take prescription meds that suppress natural melatonin production.

I'd be very careful about starting and especially staying on melatonin. Here is a quick response from Gemini on some serious issues from recent studies: numerous studies have explored the side effects of melatonin. While it is generally considered safe for short-term use, recent research and clinical reviews have identified several potential risks, ranging from common mild symptoms to emerging concerns about long-term cardiovascular health.
Common and Short-Term Side Effects
Most clinical trials report that side effects are mild and usually resolve once the supplement is discontinued. The most frequently cited effects include:
• Drowsiness & "Hangover" Effect: Daytime sleepiness or a groggy feeling the next morning, especially if taken too late in the night.
• Headaches and Dizziness: These are among the most common complaints in randomized controlled trials.
• Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, stomach cramps, or occasional diarrhea.
• Vivid Dreams: Many users report more intense dreams or nightmares.
• Mood Changes: Short-term irritability, mild anxiety, or feelings of depression have been documented in some individuals.
Recent Findings: Long-Term Concerns
While historical data suggested melatonin was benign for long-term use, newer research has raised significant questions:
• Cardiovascular Risks (2025 Study): A large-scale preliminary study presented at the American Heart Association's 2025 Scientific Sessions found an association between long-term melatonin use (12 months or more) and an increased risk of heart failure and all-cause mortality. While this study shows an association rather than direct cause-and-effect, it has prompted calls for more rigorous long-term safety monitoring.
• Hormonal Impact in Children: There is ongoing debate regarding melatonin's impact on puberty. Some studies express concern that because melatonin is a hormone, it could theoretically interfere with the hormonal shifts that trigger puberty, though human data on this remains inconclusive.
• Interactions with Medications: Melatonin can interfere with blood thinners, epilepsy medications, diabetes drugs, and immunosuppressants.
