At least historically, the Deluxe desktop version of TurboTax handles investment properties and stock sales just fine. Although Intuit is not exactly forthright in their marketing, the truth in past years (including last year) is that the Deluxe has all of the interview questions you need in order to do both investment properties and stock sales etc. The only difference between Deluxe and Premier has been that Premier includes a bit more explanation. Most people - even those targeted for Premier - will not find any significant difference between the two desktop products.
There are also those who like FreeTaxUSA and H&R Block. I've not tried the first, and my personal experience is that HRB is not as robust when you start getting into more complicated situations (K-1s, income from multiple states, complex depreciation, etc.). So I have always come back to TurboTax (grudgingly) but I don't buy anything more than the Deluxe.
P.S. There is a difference between Turbotax Desktop and on-line. For on-line, they do have different interviews available for Premier that are not available in Deluxe and if you were doing on-line you would need more than Deluxe. That said, for somewhat complicated (or more complicated) taxes, I have found the Desktop product to be more robust and you can see the forms themselves. IMHO, it's a better product.
I have bought Home and Business for the last couple of years because I worked full-time at one job and had a very small side business that I also needed to report on.
Now this past September I retired and have been taking some 401K money monthly. No Social Security money yet, just 401K. Would Deluxe indeed be perfectly fine for me? Thank you for any help!
