Marketing, mostly.
Carplay, as far as I can tell, requires a data-capable USB-C cable. Some of the cables out there are just for charging and won't work. I assume the typical person these days has 10+ USB-C cables of various types, and at least five of them carry data.
So this is just a simple USB 2.0 cable right? Description says 480mbps and I don't believe carplay or android auto really need anything special.
That should be all it needs, but for some reason Carplay and AA are very picky. I tried some cheap Best Buy brand cables (I forget the name) and they were hit or miss. Wouldn't always connect at first, random disconnects, one died completely, etc. I then bought some good Anker cables (though not marketed for Carplay/AA) and they have been fantastic so far.

I tried using Android Auto with different cables, Some would barely connect while some would cause my phone to overheat due to so much data being sent over the cable and the head unit. Might be a problem only to my set up because I have an aftermarket radio using AA with Samsung S21+. I now use a wireless AA/Carplay dongle from eBay that set me back 10 bucks that works pretty good.
