tbf, I wouldn't plug my PC or home theater equipment into a $12(msrp) surge protector and expect it to actually protect.

But, it is a better option than a basic power strip, which I would definitely use to plug random, low cost electronics into.

Most people will plug in a pc/home theater equipment though and that is where the problem lies. These low end products make the claim that they are providing protection but at this level provide nothing.

I had to robo-vac proof my house, so got rid of the corded surge protectors (4 of them) and got one that plugs into the outlet and has surge protection, and usb-c ports etc. Also, important that it screws into the outlet..
