American here. Was in Bali this past summer for 3 nights and it was fantastic! You don't usually go just to Bali, but rather visit Asia then include a few relaxing days in Bali. In my case, it was Taiwan and Borneo with Bali in between with 15 days of travel total.

Bali itself is touristy, but you can take day trips to other areas. I loved the people in Bali and the local food is awesome. Getting rice plates with various dishes at a Muslim warung for under $2 is unbeatable.

Specific to this deal, hotels in the Nusa Dua area are nice and usually pricey!! We didn't stay in that area because of that, instead we stayed in the Kuta area for around $100/night at a very nice resort. $200/night seems to be a good price, but do a compare on Expedia for hotels in the same area to see how good the deal is.

I have no frame of reference whether this is:
1. A good place to stay
2. A good deal

5 nights. By the time you overcome jet-lag, it's time to leave.

Been to Bali three times now and love it. Nusa Dua is a great place to recharge and get over the jet lag then move to other places. Ideally staying at hotels or Airbnbs that are owned by locals, they will go above and beyond for you.

Yeah it would be impossible to integrate this into a longer trip ... great point.

If you're in the US Bali is not worth the flight. I've been to over 75 countries and Bali is a complete tourist trap. The rest of Indonesia I liked a lot. It's a easy trip for Australians and I talked to several that asked why we took such a long flight for Bali when we have so many places closer.

I haven't been in years, but it still lives on in my dreams. I will agree with TenderFlag--don't go and just sit in a resort in Nusa Dua, and don't just do massive bus tours. Read about the culture, and hire a car/van to take you to different parts of the island and learn about everyday life. Talk with locals. Try different food.

Still one of my favorite places to visit, even though it seems to get more and more touristy by the year.

I mostly visited Bali when I lived in Japan. My sister works parts of the year in Sumatra.

I disagree that it isn't worth the length of the flight. I guess if you are flying in and flying out for a five-day stay, you are on a plane for a very long time. If it's just to hang in Nusa Dua (or in Kuta with the Australians) then there are probably better choices in the Caribbean and Latin America. But the Balinese culture and people make it worth the visit, overall, for me.

(It's also a strange calculus. You could say the same about lots of places that are far from the US, from NZ and Fiji to parts of Africa. Hell, why do so many visit California from the Gold Coast?)
