This Yxk 15.6 inch portable monitor is mainly appealing as a cheap travel or second screen with decent picture quality and a built in kickstand. It works over USB C DisplayPort Alt Mode or HDMI, and the low power draw makes it handy for laptops, iPads, Raspberry Pi setups, and camera monitors. The main tradeoffs are a dim 250 nit panel, only 72 percent sRGB, no VESA mount, and no case or audio jack on some units. It feels like a practical budget pick if you can live with modest brightness and color.
people using a portable second screen for an iPad Pro because it's been reported as working well as a second display with decent picture quality for the price (and users note you can add a cheap case if you want one).
travelers and remote workers who want a lightweight extra display because multiple commenters say these portable monitors are "amazing for travel and remote work," with one user also reporting months of daily hours of use.
buyers who don't need ultra-bright or color-accurate output because commenters say it's a good deal if you don't need super color accuracy or ultra brightness (and they still find it acceptable around ~$40).
Raspberry Pi / RetroPie owners who want a small on-the-go gaming setup because one commenter specifically said they might use it with their Raspberry Pi RetroPie setup for gaming while traveling.
surveillance camera system owners who need a low-power monitor because a user reported using a similar portable monitor for a year as a surveillance monitor with very low power consumption.
people who need a VESA-mount portable monitor because this model doesn't have VESA mount support (unlike a refurbished Acer alternative mentioned in the thread).
buyers who want a long service life because at least one commenter says these portable monitors tend to fail and should be treated as disposable (with a max around ~18 months if used regularly).
people who specifically need a sturdy cover-stand design because one user disliked a similar portable monitor where the cover-as-stand wasn't sturdy and kept sliding/dropping, preferring the built-in stand on this model instead.
It is rated around 250 nits, which is relatively dim for a monitor. It is usable for the price, but it can look washed out and is not ideal if you want strong brightness or color accuracy.
No drivers are required for basic display output. HDMI and similar video connections are standardized, so it should work with any operating system; only extra features like touch would need drivers.
Yes. It supports USB 3.1 Type-C DisplayPort Alt Mode, so a compatible USB-C cable and a device like iPhone 15 or newer can drive it directly. In that mode, it can also drain the phone battery.
Ordered one too.
Yet another display for my workstation. Raspberry pi gaming seems like a good idea too.
Or maybe I'll teach my nephew how to use Linux with it.
Does Linux have the required drivers to support this monitor?
Does Linux have the required drivers to support this monitor?
There are no drivers required, it will work with any operating system. The video data over HDMI etc. is standardized and not specific for monitors. Only if there would be additional functionality like a touch screen that could require a driver.
Thanks for linking. I got one of the Acer and it has been great so far. It came with a 2 year warranty. I got a no name one a couple of years back that fortunately fell and broke. The picture was always off.
Anyone know if there's something similar except with a built in power supply? Could use it for work as an HDMI tester
They sell some as standalone portable monitors with built in battery but they are about 3 times more expensive, on the upside many are completely wireless with wifi based display (gotta wonder on the lag on that).
Bought one of these last time they went to this price, had it all of a day before my oldest broke the screen on his laptop (faulty hinge/frame connection) and "borrowed" it so he could keep using the laptop (not really worth the cost to fix correctly). Been a couple of months now where it gets used daily for hours a day, I'm actually surprised and how well it has held up so far. I'm going to be buying another one so I can actually use it this time.

Yes, I agree. Another reason to go with your suggested unit is that Amazon reviews show that many of the Yxk monitors have a short life. In addition, Amazon sells way more of the $50 monitor you suggest. I ordered one yesterday.

I have been through a few of these, bought the more expensive versions with 4k resolution as well. The only lesson I have learnt along the way is that they will fail, so consider them disposable and spend the minimum amount possible.
If used regularly, I have got a max of 18 months out of any of them.
They are amazing for travel and remote work.
