Keep in mind, visiting an HEB in the coming days (at least by me in central Texas) is going to be a major pain in the butt considering the upcoming weather.
This H-E-B promo pairs a $100 MasterCard, Visa, or American Express gift card with a free $20 H-E-B gift card, and the main draw is the extra value on prepaid spend. The cards can be easier to find at $6.95 fee in some stores, though others still show $7.95. Redemption is the bigger catch, since these prepaid cards are hard to register for online use and often fail at tipping merchants or some checkout systems. Self-checkout also appears store specific, so cashier lanes may be smoother for multiple cards.
People who want a prepaid card for everyday store purchases, because cashier checkout can handle multiple cards without the self-checkout approval hassle.
Shoppers trying to stack multiple gift-card deals in one self-checkout transaction, because the self-checkout limit can trigger manager approval before the discount applies.
Yes, self-checkout can process gift cards, but some stores trigger a manager-approval red alert or direct you to a regular lane. At least one store also appears to block non-store gift cards at self-checkout unless staff override it.
These prepaid cards can be hard to use online because they usually cannot be registered with a name and address. They may fail on many vendors, so a practical workaround is to use them for bills where accepted or convert them into a traditional gift card like Amazon.
Yes, some stores have $100 Vanilla Visa cards with a $6.95 fee instead of $7.95. Other locations still appear to stock the $7.95 version, so the fee can vary by store.
They are difficult to use at places that require tipping, including restaurants, salons, and massage services. The card often cannot be handled cleanly at checkout because the tip amount complicates the transaction.
I buy these most of the time when HEB runs this promo -- including yesterday. Just be aware these are a PITA to redeem -- they don't allow you to register your card with your address -- many online vendors will not accept (I try to use these for monthly bills -- electric, gas, cell, insurance). You may have to try a few sites -- another option is to take the prepaid card and buy a traditional gc -- ie. Amazon.
Other prepaid cards can be registered and are easier to use.
So these work with Amazon? And I presume we could buy other GCs with it on Amazon too?
Would like to buy some and use at Costco but according to comments that's a no-go.
How do you guys get it to work? I clipped the coupon and added the 100$ visa gift + 25 $ HEB (there's no 20$) and do not see discount applied at checkout.

HEB Marketplace on Bandera Road. Here in San Antonio, TX. Has been having issues with coupons in the App. Scan the phone. and it doesn't apply the discount. and it's been like this for probably going on 2 months now. Any other locations having this issue?
you actually succeeded? Was not able to using self checkout.
Were you trying to buy more than one $100 card? Go to cashier checkout. So many of us used Discover card to pay successfully. Here is from the original post:
Self-checkout will flag for manager's approval if the gift card amount exceeds $212. It is actually faster to use cashier checkout. No manager's approval is required at cashier checkout.

This is incorrect.
Self checkout LIMIT on gift cards is $200 BEFORE discount. So you cannot do multiples of this deal at SCO in 1 transaction as the gift card total would be $240 before the discount.

We actually meant the same thing. The $212 amount includes the purchase fee before discount and is the amount displayed in the red alert on self-checkout screen. When I scanned my first card MasterCard $100, the amount shown on my self-checkout screen was $106.95. Then I scanned my second card AMEX $100, the accumulated total would be $213.30. A red alert immediately displayed on my self-checkout screen to flag for manager's approval: Amount exceeds $212. The red alert stopped me from scanning more items or going to coupon screen.

Some stores carry Vanilla $100 cards with a $6.95 fee instead of $7.95.
Credit card cashback can largely offset the gift-card purchase fees because H-E-B is in the grocery category.
Cashier checkout can avoid self-checkout manager-approval prompts when buying multiple $100 cards.
Self-checkout can process gift cards, and debit card payment can work even when Discover credit card is blocked.
Discover credit card payments can be blocked at self-checkout, even when the gift cards themselves scan.
Vanilla prepaid gift cards can be a hassle to redeem because many online vendors will not accept unregistered cards.
Coupon redemption can fail at certain locations when the app scan does not apply the discount at checkout.
Self-checkout can trigger a red alert for manager approval based on the accumulated total shown on-screen.
