Is the Gen 10 (Ryzen 9 9955HX) at risk?
Likely No.
Following the backlash and high failure rates of the 2021/2022 units, repair technicians and industry reports indicate that Lenovo altered their solder composition for high-performance (HX/High-TDP) parts in subsequent generations.
The Gen 10 uses a completely different motherboard design and manufacturing process compared to the Gen 6.
Summary Advice
If buying New (Gen 10): Do not let this specific rumor stop you. The issue is historically tied to the 2021 manufacturing process.

don't buy a Ryzen Lenovo. They are known for low-temp solder issues. my 2021 model had to change mainboard twice after the factory warranty expired. luckily I purchased extended warranty.

This has a powerful CPU with 16 cores and 32 threads. It is more powerful than many desktops
That's just not factually how high performance CPUs work. A high-end workstation CPU alone can draw more power than this entire laptop because of thermal overhead.

Would these laptops serve as a good desktop replacement? I dont game, but I'm looking for a desktop replacement for coding, ai, 3d cad, and general productivity. Looking for quiet operation and longevity.
4gb vram less than 5080 can make a big difference for you if you are doing local AI.

Txt or video work. Some models won't fit and you will get slow perf. Some video models are much harder to get working on 8GB. Lots of work around required or waiting for quantized models etc.

I am happy to have 16GB vram but I want to check if I can run full 30B txt models without a big lag. I can run GPT-OSS-20B (75 tokens/s on LMstudio) - this is pretty quick compared to my M4 Pro with 24GB ram but I don't think I can run 30B models well at all.

I am want to move up.

Video is very good for the newest LTX-2 video generation and I had to look up a lot of posts to figure out how to get it working right for me on 16GB. Some got it working with 8GB but it's just a pain in the ass and it did required a lot of changes at first and waiting for someone to make a quantized model.

Sometimes it's just convenience to pay more and not have to worry about any of this.

Yes, that's why I was saying to him it's 4GB less than a 5080. He said he was doing AI work but not specifics but it could make a big difference for him.

Anyone know if this screen is anti-glare? Their site just says 'glare' which is a funny way of describing a glossy reflective screen, so wondered if they mean ant-glare where they just say 'glare'.

Thanks bud I grabbed it... should be arriving tomorrow. Getting into generating ai videos and thought this would be a pretty good start for a work station. Hopefully a good buy?

I prefer to have more VRAM but this should rock also (I see you got the Omen like I did with 16GB). I was jus writing it somewhere that the LTX-2 video model can run as low as 8-12GB from what I've seen but I usually run it higher so I'm more comfortable with 16GB.

I generated this temp clip for you. 20 seconds, 720P, it took about 350 seconds to generate.

https://litter.catbox.moe/g6wr8be6sxvsewwd.mp4

It took a lot of work to tweak the settings etc and look for guides for the tweaks. I was pretty frustrate for 2 full days not able to get it working right. It's in decent shape that I was able to get this created in basically 5-6 minutes begin to end. I just have to automate it more and tweak as I go. I gave a simple dialog, and the model just generated the rest of the video because I didn't give it more prompts to do. I just wanted to demonstrate how fast it is to do 20 seconds. 5 seconds would have been like 130-150s.

This is the thread you MUST SEE to know how awesome it will work on 12GB VRAM with the right workflow - I couldn't get it to work so I am using something else.

Once you see this guy's video, you should be inspired on what you can do!!!!!

From all I've learn in the pas 2 weeks. Acer Refurb is Trash (it is cheaper) but support sucks? Lenovo seems to get a better rep.

I guess it's the legion regular OLED screen. For me it's unusable because it's too reflective.

A Gaming Laptop due to power and thermal constraints would be at best (5090 Laptop) close to a Desktop 5070 Ti. Sometimes flat out losing too. A 5080 Laptop loses in most scenarios to a 5070 Desktop etc…. Keep those expectations in mind
