I don't know about Tapo but I bought some Tp-Link Kasa smart plugs and it turns out although it supports Matter, you will only be able to see the energy reading in their proprietary phone app which defeats the purpose of my purchase.

I think everyone's missing the mark on this. Being matter certified means I'm not tied to their app. Home assistant is open source and free. If you have an old crappy computer kicking around you can install Home assstant on it (it's it's own operating system in place of windows) and then you can start using devices like this without needing 30 other apps.

The energy monitoring on this is incredibly useful, but not for measuring anything—it's to help with notifications. I can plug my non-smart washer into one of these and get a notification on my phone when it stops running!

IKEA has them for cheaper but uses zigbee instead, you can set up HA to use both but you'd need two antennas

Not a good deal. Have found these at ~$5/per in a 4-pack. Suggest to wait for that deal.

Cool! How do you manage it? Does everything show up in one single interface, or do you have 10 different apps to manage 10 different iOT things? Does it all show up in Apple Home flawlessly, or do you need to use different apps for every different device?

How much of it hasn't had a password change since God knows when? Is it on an iOT network, or do you just trust all of these different companies to sit on your home network (often with sensitive data like your comings and goings, your purchase history, your camera / video recordings, and more) fully accessible?

When's the latest firmware update they've had to reduce vulnerabilities?

When you say you haven't had any difficulties, what exactly does that mean? That you set it up once then forgot about it? Etc etc... it's all in what you care about. If just plugging it in and getting it working with Alexa is your sole criteria, and then referring to the Alexa app a few times a year to remind yourself what devices have what features, that might be all that you care about.
So far that has been my experience with Kasa products - install it 'n forget it. I have Kasa light switch and plugs throughout the house.

First, thank you for the post. This gave me some insights on the whole confusing market of home smart devices. But may I ask what antenna are you talking about? And does this energy monitor work without the tp app (say for example i am on homekit or ghome)?

Both Zigbee and Thread (eg "matter OVER thread") use wireless signals. Just like your phone and laptop need to connect to your wifi router, zigbee and thread devices also need to connect to something. In Home Assistant land, they're pushing their ZBT-2 antenna that you can just plug into your HA computer and start to use either Zigbee or Thread BUT NOT BOTH. Apparently they had stability issues trying to run both at the same time. You can get other devices than ZBT-2, but that's what I meant by "antenna". Apparently you can't use the standard wifi card in your computer to connect to these things. When you buy a "hub" from a company, you're essentially buying computer with an antenna built in. I don't like the idea of being locked into their brand and so recently have been playing with home assistant and it's very cool.
Regarding the energy monitor working without the tp app, one amazon reviewer from September 2025 posted screenshots from Home Assistant showing energy monitoring working, https://www.amazon.com/gp/custome...5DKU0O96D/ but I don't know about homekit or ghome

Yep, the Kasa plugs work just fine for me too. They were just on sale for $14 for a 2 pack at Amazon.

as of today only buy matter products, not kasa brand but tapo and matter
Understand that these are Matter over Wi-Fi, not Matter over Thread. If you are looking to reduce the number of IoT devices gumming up your Wi-Fi, these will not do that. Matter over Thread devices are the way to go.

Matter has been a slow thing coming, but it seems like 2026 is the break out year. Lots of devices were showing Matter support at CES this year.

Yeah my Kasa seem to always be connected and do exactly what I want. Every other brand I've had somehow have lost connection or need firmware updates to continue to work or are completely reset and require me to re-sync them to wifi, etc.

I'm sticking with Kasa

These need a firmware update after which energy reporting will be displayed over a Matter connection. You need to use the Tapo app to perform that firmware update.
While it shows in Home Assistant, I can't see any of the energy data in Apple Home - I believe this is because Apple doesn't support this kind of data yet. I have a lot of energy monitoring (including most of the circuits within my breaker panel) and the data gets ignored by Apple Home.

Most people are likely to already have a Thread Border Router on their home network, and Home Assistant can discover these and connect to Thread devices through them.
I was going to buy a second zigbee dongle to set up Thread until I discovered I already had 5 Thread border routers thanks to the HomePods and Apple TVs around the house.

They've been around $6-7/per. The four pack of P110M have gone on sale between $24-29 dollars depending on account specific coupons.

These are great devices to monitoring power and putting devices on a schedule. I have 8 of these little devices and they've worked very well with the iOS app and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to other. However, I'd skip the 2 pack because the price per unit is way too high.

For those interested in the Matter aspect - these P110M do indeed support Energy and Power measurement over Matter, at least in Home Assistant. The units I recently purchased did not come with the latest firmware, so I had to use the Tapo app to pair and upgrade. Once that's done, you can add these devices to HA (or others) with the Matter v1.3 profile supporting Energy. Works well and cheap.
